Boeing loses $40B Air Force tanker contract
Looks like the Air Force chose Northrop Grumman and Airbus over Boeing to replace the aging tanker fleet. I can't believe we're gonna have Airbus's flying for the US Air Force.
Boeing blew this one by pushing the smaller 767 platform.

Sadly, the Airbus beat the Boeing fair and square. It can hold more people, more cargo, offload more fuel and operate out of a 7,000 foot runway with a full fuel load. Boeing, Airbus... whatever. As long as it gives me a paycheck.

Don't worry about getting into those shinny new Airbus' to soon. I can guarentee that Boeing is going to protest that decision.
But, by the numbers I have to agree and say that EADS beat Boeing at their own game. As we can see, the Air Force does not opt for the smaller less expensive version of ANYTHING! F-22s at $200M a pop!? Airbus just offered a larger, more capable aircraft for the same money. Nice business move.
On a personal note, I can't believe we are going to fund the FRENCH economy! How hard are they laughing at us right now? All the way to the damned bank!

The folks in Alabama and Florida are going to be quite happy with the decision but I doubt they consider themselves "French".
Fact is... NO country sole-sources a major airplane manufacturing any more and hasn't for quite some time.
(oh, and the French don't laugh.. they smirk)

Still Like Boeing
Engines are US , avionics are US , FMS is US , assembled in the US , many systems and components come from the US

I doubt they consider themselves experienced Aerospace workers either...like the ones in Washington who are about to lose their jobs when the 767 line closes.

Not sure how I feel about this yet...if we can just call it a Northrop KC-45, and it's made in the deep south, I think I'll be ok with that. And we've bought French war machines before...anyone ever heard of a SPAD?

You do realize that there has been various aviation groups in Alabama going back to WWII. For instance, read a bit of Lindbergh's commentary on delivering brand new B-24s to Montgomery and Mobile for field mods (he was upset that government contracts called for the aircraft to be FULLY fueled for acceptance and on acceptance they flew to Alabama where they promptly defueled the airplanes. The fuel then was considered contaminated and could not be used again). I think Hayes and others have been in BHM for years. We used to take -135s down to them for mods so it is not like Bubba and Red have never seen an airplane before.

I doubt anyone will lose their job over it. The 767 line is creeping along anyway. The workers will probably be moved to another line.....have you seen how many orders there are for the 777, 787 and the 748?
