Military Reserves + Airline
Hey guys,
Just was wondering if anyone is flying for the reserves that was not prior active duty, or if its even possible. I was considering going down and talking to a recruiter or someone about more info, but thought I would drop it out here first. -Imp |
You can definately join the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve with no prior active duty experience. Training will take 2-3 years of active duty, which will include at least one year at your squadron. Your airline seniority will accrue while you're gone...if you're an FO now, you will come back as a CA.
Rough Basic Requirements: - 4 Year degree (good grades very helpful) - Good Health, athletic to some degree. - Pretty good uncorrected vision (20/70 I think). - No serious background issues. - Age 28-30 max when you start flight training. This changes, not sure what it is right now. - Lot's of initiative. - Helpful but not required to be a local boy/girl to the squadron you want to join. These are rough requirements and may not be 100% accurate. See the military forum and baseops.net for more info. Expect to have to chase this down and make it happen...lot's of legwork (and paperwork) required, it won't just fall in your lap. You will need to talk to a special officer recruiter...the guy in the little office at the strip mall won't be able to help you, although I'm sure he'll try to sign you up for helicopter Mx or something. The Navy and Marines don't hire reserve pilots off the street. |
If you want to get in a reserve unit you better start working at it now. We're talking emails, calls, personal visits, few rounds of drinks etc.

Thanks for the replies. I have corrected vision, which is why I was unable to fly for the military prior.
It's one of those things that pops into my head every now and then, but I know I'll never do it =) Plus 2-3 years active would sure set me back, career wise. |

Yep, joined the AF reserves right off the street with no active duty experience, so yeah, it's possible. You are going to need to talk to a reserve recruiter, and he's going to need to be an officer recruiter. Baseops.net has all the info you need to get started i'm sure. As for "setting you back 2-3 years", i'm not sure what that means.... if you are concerned about being set back from being the gear jerker in an RJ making 17K a year, then this whole military thing probably isn't for you.

Seriously, we don't need guys with that thought process joining, especially before they've even had the privilege of going to UPT.

uncorrected vision is waiverable up to 20/200. |
