Come out to Little Rock some time, average 10-15 Herks in the pattern, all doing anywhere from 10-40 patterns. In the schoolhouse our local PRO lines end up with 2-3 students each requiring 10-15 landings. Anything from no-flap, to 3 engine, full flap. To break things up it's fun to "demo" a random shallow abeam tactical arrival, 250K, 500' AGL, perpendicular to the runway, over midfield, pull to idle and 45degree AOB and pull it around, gear and flaps on speed to land on a 3000' LZ, in the 500' zone. I loves me some Herk!

N1Cessna2: Tower, N172 3 miles south, request overhead
Tower: N172, report initial, I'll call your break

This morning I was reading part of a book called "Everything a Professional Pilot Needs To Know" (or something close to that). It described the civilian "overhead" approach. I guess it is already out there;)

I would love to try a combat landing I think that would be sweet. I think it's called a penetration approach could be wrong though.

In the tactical airlift realm: there is a tactical approach, overhead is included in this category, but not as fun as a random shallow:D(300 feet, 250Kts, 60 degrees of banks for a 270 degree continuous turn to final.

there is also a tactical landing, what we call an assault landing, ie must land in a 500' zone, usually on a dirt strip about 3000' long.

there is also a penetration descent, where you stay at enroute altitude for as long as possible, and then go power to idle and fall out of the sky very quickly.

Hey130drvr
Not to mess in your nuts or anything, but the last time I was flying at The Rock, I seem to recall your assault strip (LZ) was 3,500' IAW the training regs. I have landed on a 3,050' strip in the mighty Herk, but that was an operational mission...OCONUS.

A 300' random shallow? How do you stay 500' away from structures as you cross the runway?

And to clarify for Ray, we plan to touchdown in the first 500' of the landing zone and be stopped by the end of the runway/assault strip.

Now who's ever landed on a 46' wide highway before in a C-130??

There's a WHOLE LOT more going on in those circular patterns than you think Ray. It's too bad you can't fly overheads in the civlian world. :p

Don't know about that. One of the guys here at FDX has a Pitts at the local airport. and everytime I go up with him, we come back to an overhead pattern. My first landing in it was out of an overhead.

Albie,

True talent involves the baseball game. If she is a real trooper she will give a play by play if you cannot see the TV.

You guys make all of this Herc stuff sound like it's actually hard to do!

Hard to do? Heck no (as your call sign suggests, you probably know this). Fun as hell, YES. The hardest thing about the Herk was crawling out of the Bravo bar at alert time to hack the mission.;)

I wanna hear more about the baseball game...:D
