C-27J Units and Training
I'm interested in knowing if the upcoming C-27J will be going to active duty army units or will it replace the C-23 Sherpas in the Army National Guard also.
What's the timeline for all this to take place...I've read 2013 but wanted to know when they will start going operational. Also...how will training be conducted on this A/C, through the AF or at the Army Fixed-Wing Training Center? |
As of right now it is going to the guard. None for Active Duty that I know of. Wealth of knowledge on APTAP. Some of the guys posting on there will be among the first units to get field it.

I saw one over at Pope/Ft Bragg last year...it did look pretty sweet. I wonder what the chances are for a civilian to get a slot flying one of those for the ArNG? I have read that it's pretty slim to get a FW slot off the street.

Cool, thanks Clue...I will check APTAP out.

Cool.
I love the powerplant/prop combo. Derivative of the same combo used on the Saab 2000, but not derated as low.
No shortage of power. Would love to fly one. |
I've heard one or two will go to Ft. Rucker, the rest to the guard. Army training at Warner Robbins, GA. and separate from the AF training. We're hearing the first states will get them FY09. There's not been a definate fielding plan, i.e. one for one Sherpa replacement with states getting 2, maybe getting one and keeping a C-12, maybe getting 3, possibly 4.

Wow, those specs are nice. I flew the C-27A down at Howard years ago and we were limited to 56,878 as a MTOGW (funny the numbers you remember). This artificially low number was to increase the lifespan of the aircraft, which of course got mothballed after we closed Howard.
Enjoy the new engines/props and the new cockpit guys! |

There are tons of chopper (and even non-rated) guys in the National Guard who have paid their dues in Afghanistan and Iraq, who are probably clamoring for a shot at this gig..and frankly, they deserve it far more than a guy who just showed up. |
