Air Force waste, tell us your story!
In light of the firings of the CSAF and the Sec of the Air Force, a new thread based on first hand knowledge of AF waste which serves to highlight more AF leadership incompetence...
My 1st story: In the good old days of flying the F-16, every quater we would conduct a combat exercise. During some of the combat phases of the exercises (Phase 2 in AF speak), we would flush money down the toilet.
We would have taxi and takeoff times for our simulated combat missions in which we would launch 4, 8, or 12 vipers in a simulated combat mission(s). Well, many a time the weather was very, very poor and we could not launch, so in order for the maintenance personnel and weapons troops to accomplish their part of the exercise, we would taxi 4, 8, or 12 vipers to the runway approach-end hammerhead and sit in idle for 70 to 80 minutes and then we would taxi back to our parking spots. These 70 to 80 minute taxi runs gave the maintenance troops and weapons folks time to drive around and practice getting attacked and practice moving bombs, HARMs, missilies, etc. around the flight line.
So, we would flush hundreds of gallons of JP-8 away starting, taxiing, idling, taxiing, and shutting down 4, 8, or 12 Vipers for exercise purposes.
What is your story?

I could write a few volumes here but a couple of my favorites.
1. Flying 10hrs with nothing on board to get to a location, RON fly 20 people an hour away, RON, fly 10hrs home. And oh by the way it was from one civilian airport to another with commercial service between the 2.
2. Like someone eluded to in another thread, seeing 48" plasma screens in the chow hall (I'm sorry dining facility) only for displaying the menu. I guess the $8 chalk board just is capable of getting the job done anymore. This is also back when these screen were running about 12G's a piece.

Air Force waste? This is like stealing candy from a baby.
I've dumped 50,000+ lbs of fuel on multiple occasions due to getting launched when the receivers were not. Every tanker guy has probably dumped several tons of gas due to operational stupidity on the planners' part.
Not to mention $110K VSP payments for my buddies and I... a month prior to my UPT commitment expiring. I was going to bail for free.
p.s. agree with the WX flat screens...and base weather shops don't even do their own forecasts anymore!!

Or one of my ops squadrons that bought between 5-10 flat screens (when they were 5K a pop) primarily to replace the scheduling grease board. They all sat in the boxes for months if not over a year because nobody knew how to link them to the computers. Don't worry though, some genius had dispensed with the greaseboards while the screens were on order, so of course with no schedule board, chaos ensued.

How about every professional military education class (i.e. SOS, ACSC, AWC) all of my wing kings have said it is "necessary" to be done in correspondence prior to going in residence. This is a giant waste of my time and and the taxpayers money. There should also be a bullet in one of my Air Medal's somewhere that says something like: "Lieutenant Stella flawlessly offloaded +1.0 mil lbs of fuel to the sky during 20 combat missions"
