What's an ASEV and how does one bust it? How does an ASEV differ from an ORI?

WAY BACK WHEN I was in water-wagons, our tankers hit all nav points, did all our refuelings. The bombers tossed shack after shack and we busted the ORI because everyone was on a first name basis (when we talked to the crew chiefs we called them by their name and they did the same with us.. great rapport) and a bunch of other minor things. The profile for the bombers was a tough one and most of the other bases were tossing bombs from Mexico to Canada. The IG team gave us 3 months and came back. Everything went FUBAR.

Tankers couldn't get airborne for maint delays. Missed nav points, missed refuelings. Bomber tossed bombs from Mexico to Canada but we wore our hats, saluted, called each other Sgt. and Capt and passed...

Have things changed???

ASEV is an aircrew stan eval visit...an inspection specific to ops. As you know, an ORI is for the whole wing. Funny you should note the first name basis thing. During our ORI (I'm in a guard unit and everyone from the Wing Commander on down is on a first name basis) my crew chief was overheard by one of the inspectors calling me by my first name. Never even occurred to us that anything was out of the norm, but the Active Duty Dork Inspector we had took issue with it. So in a sense, nothing has changed. Well, unless you count losing total sight of the real mission as a change.

Try telling your son that the base was named for Navy Lt Seymour A. Johnson who died for his country in March 1941 test flying a F4F-3. A Navel Academy Graduate with over 4000 flying hours, the folks in his home town, Goldsboro, NC, thought so much of him, they asked the Air Corps to name their new base after him. Today, Lt Johnson is immortalized by being the only Navel Officer to have a Air Force base named for him, and by having his initials, SJ, grace the tails of the over 80 F-15Es of the most legendary fighter wing in the USAF. Not bad for a Red Neck Squid with a funny name. Tell you son that, maybe he won't laugh so hard.

Holy cow, lighten up, Francis. My dad was stationed there in the 80's...I kind of thought it was funny, too. Still do. And Lt Johnson sounds like a great American. Albeit one with a humorous name.

No disrespect intended (even if he was a squid), but the name in today's and my day's context can be considered humorous. Farts are funny too. BTW...I actually did tell him who the base was named after a long time ago and he still thinks it is a funny name, just like the many other names out there that have been made fun of for years. Ever hear of Mike Hunt? Peter Gozinya? GMAFB Francis. Lighten up.
