For starters, let me state that I’m not the brightest crayon in the box… But to make a long story short, I’ am highly intrigued in applying for the Air force (Pilot Slot) via OCS! My only caveat is, I suck at test taking (AFOQT) and my Air force GPA accumulates to 2.7!!!

So my question is, do I even have a chance at a slot (am I wasting my time)… Would I even be competitive with mediocre scores and a low GPA…? I know they look at the whole person concept; but with my stats will my papers even make the review board????

The Air Force's commissioning school is OTS (Officer Training School), not OCS (Navy/Marines/Army). Other than that, my grades were in a similar range, still got in via the Reserves, although I did very well on the AFOQT...on the other hand, I hear Active Duty OTS slots are getting really tough.

Silly question: What is an AF gpa?

I always reccommend reserve or national guard instead of active duty AF. In the reserves or NG you will probably know in advance what you will be flying, in the active duty you might get stuck "flying" by computer.

AF GPA takes into account all college courses that you have taken for credit, regardless of what school. So you took onecollege course while in high school and got a C, and then got stellar grades at big name university, they are going to factor in that C.

??? Sounds like an excellent way to weed out those talented folks who were aimless and uninspired at some point in their youth, but then got their act together.

Zero-defect mentality...I knew a minor indescretion as an O-1 would preclude ever making flag rank, but counting high school against college is ridiculous!

I wouldn't put much stock in that. I graduated the bottom 50% (of less than 40 people) in my high school, got a 2.9 GPA in college and even failed a class. Still managed to get my wings. I would say it's more of a whole person concept. You still have AFOQT, BAT (or TBAS), extra curricular activities, volunteer work, all that good stuff.

To the original poster, don't worry about how others think you'll do. If you really want it then go for it. If I would have listened to all the naysayers I would still be CFI or working in the regionals (not a dig on them). I was told no less than 15 times that I wouldn't be able to be an Air Force pilot, that just pi$$ed me off and gave me even more drive.

Goodluck, and look into the guard as well. I can't count how many times I have heard, I wish I was in the guard.
