Glad to hear. I went back up to Sheppard several years ago for a friends son's graduaion. At the reception got to talking with a reserve guy who had been a FAIP when I was there. He told me that continuity had gone out the window and it was rare for the reserve guys to fly with the same student. But, that was ENJJPT were the Europeans were always lax with such "USAF stuff".

PS Crew, do you know if ENJJPT switched to the T-6 or are they still in tweets.

I flew with many of the reservists but they still tried to keep the counters down. Every once in a while you would get a high count going, but they generally didn't do that to the weak swimmers.

We are about half and half right now. I think the last tweet class just started, there a more T-6's and less tweets everyday. The transient ramp is getting full of tweets waiting for their last flight to the boneyard. Sad to see....the tweet was a great plane.

Ferd:

Continuity, at least at Columbus in the T-38, is overall pretty good with Reservists.

What you may not know is we comprise about 50% of the IP cadre by number of bodies. Factoring out the Active-Duty CC and DO, and other supervisory types that can't fly on a regular basis, and our actual production numbers place us in 50-60% of the sorties.

Unlike a traditional Guard or Reserve squadron that only works weekends, we general DON'T work weekends. We are obligated to fly at least 7 days a month, and I believe 9 student sorties. I actually fly about 15 days and 30 sorties a month.

So, I fly a bunch, and have continuity with 4 or 5 students at a time.

AZF:

The students get about 70-80 hours in "Phase 2" as they call it (I don't know the precise number). When they get to the T-38 or "Phase 3," they get about 100-115 in theory, but usually closer to 120 due to repeated rides, maintenance incompletes, etc. Call it 180-200 total to become a rated pilot.

All:

Guys have washed out of IFF at Columbus and been given a Heavy. More often than being completely washed out of UPT, guys tend to graduate from the T-38 but not be fighter qualified (guys from fighter guard units--that has been a problem, at least 3 in the last 2 years). They try to find a guard Heavy unit that needs them.

I was in 87-03 as previously stated... we started in Feb 86. the classes then at Willy were between 60-70 studs, with 2 flights... I was No Loss in Tweets and Boyson in 38's. Classes started every 6 weeks. About 75% of our class that washed did so in tweets... the rest mostly early on in 38's... but we did have two late washouts in 38's!! As I remember my continuity was really good in Tweets.... as I mostly flew with a Guest Help guy from the student squadron. In 38's flew with a few more guys, but not an inordinate number. In those days you were never more than a three or four days from being gone... thats just the way it was. You dealt with the pressure or you didnt.

Hey UAL,

Sounds like the program has progressed. Sounds like a great way to keep experience in the UPT squadrons and the youngsters out on the front lines!

On another issue, does Paul Rowcliffe still run the sim contract there at Columbus? How about Ron Vaughan?

Looking back at my forms I completed T-6s with right around 86 hours. No hooks..so give or take some of my classmates had up to ten more hours or so depending on 88's and hooks etc.


I will say this..I saw some people in my class that should have been washed out completely get pumped through the program..without getting into a specifics they happened to be of the other gender.

I also saw 2 guys get washed out of 38s after being forced into them..both wanted to go T-1s..crazy eh?
