AV-8B Harrier down in NC

Fox News was reporting today that a AV-8B Harrier II had crashed today in the North Carolina woods. No reports on the condition of the pilot. Has anyone else heard any details?

I am not a military pilot however, my father is a Naval Flight Surgeon and we did about 5 years in Cherry Point from 87-92. He actually flew the AV-8Bs when we were there and then went over to F18-Ds with another squadron I think. In the AV-8 he was in VMA-223. Is this the squadron does anyone know? God Speed.....

No Turbo - it wasn't VMA-223 - it was the Harrier FRS squadron - VMAT-203. Was your father a flight surgeon and flew IN Harriers and F/A-18Ds or was he also a pilot?I had a flight surgeon who had been a Navy Helo guy and then went to med school. Even then he got qualified to fly the T-34 for the squadron as our Flight Surgeon.

Marine identified

The pilot of the AV-8B Harrier that crashed near Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Monday afternoon was Capt. Alberto N. Bencosme.
Sounds like the Capt was a FRS student - just learning how to fly the Harrier.
Pilot in Harrier crash was always determined to fly | bencosme, peralta, miami - Local - ENCToday
