Default USAF voluntary officer recall (including retirees)

From the AFPC website:
The Air Force has implemented a voluntary Retired Rated Officer Recall
Program and a voluntary Rated Officer Limited Period Recall Program.
These programs are open to Rated Lt Colonels and below; therefore not
everyone who expressed interest will be eligible to apply.

Officers recalled under these programs will be used in a myriad of
positions to include: Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance
(UAS/RC-12); rated staff; and other rated requirements. Officers will
be recalled for periods between 24 and 48 months depending upon the
requirement. Officers recalled under these programs will not be
eligible to receive Aviator Continuation Pay (ACP) and by volunteering
for recall will be eligible for deployment. Application period for
these programs is through 31 Dec 09.

The following guidelines apply to the Retired Rated Officer Recall
Program specifically: Retired Regular and Reserve officers in the
grades of Lt Col and below are eligible to apply. Applicants must be
under age 60 to apply. Officers retired via a Selective Early
Retirement Board (SERB) are eligible to apply. Officers permanently
retired for physical disability are ineligible.

The following guidelines apply to the Limited Period Recall Program
specifically: Applicants must be Air Reserve Component (ARC) rated
officers in the grades of Lt Col and below. ARC officers who separated
from active duty with any branch of service for strength reduction and
for non selection for promotion are eligible to apply.

Detailed information, to include application requirements and
procedures, can be found on the AFPC ASK website
(AFPC - Air Force Personnel Center) by entering either Retired Rated
Recall Program or Limited Period Recall Program in the search tool on
the website. Interested individuals can also contact the Air Force
Customer Service Center at 1-800-616-3775 (after 22 Feb 09, number
changes to 1-800-525-0102), commercial 210-565-5000 or DSN 665-5000
(please ensure to choose the active duty menu options provided) or
e-mail [email protected] for information.

Very Respectfully,
The Voluntary Officer Recall to Active Duty Section

Q9. I received Voluntary Separation Pay (VSP) when I separated. Will I have to repay the Voluntary Separation Pay upon recall to extended active duty?
Q9. Yes, Voluntary Separation Pay will be deducted in installments from monthly active duty basic pay upon return to extended active duty according to the following schedule: Divide the Voluntary Separation Pay amount paid by the result of subtracting the number of months served on active duty plus one month, from 240. The resulting dollar amount is the amount collected from each month’s active duty basic pay until the entire amount has been collected or the extended active duty tour ends, whichever occurs first. Note: Do not count periods of 15 days or less. An amount more than 15 days counts as one month.

I can't believe this news has not been more celebrated by all the junior guys at FDX, and to a lesser extent UPS. many of the most junior guys at UPS came from the C-17 world and are the demographic the USAF would love to use for the staff jobs and bodies for the ISR jobs. O-4 pay equates to well over 100k at an airline job. This is a great way to ride out the recession. The needs of the Air Force be damned, this could really help out some folks.

I agree...but things like this make me nervous. The proverbial "bathtub" of rated officers was forecast a long time ago and until now the USAF has chosen to ignore it. 2009/2010 was the bottom of the tub for the last projection I saw before retiring from the service. If there wasn't a recession and/or if age 65 hadn't passed, the bathtub would be a yawning chasm and this would be an involuntary recall...I hope it doesn't eventually become one anyway. I enjoyed my time in but I don't want to go back...good luck to those than do.

I think that if the guys who received VSP that want to come back on active duty and fill must need jobs like UAV and NSA MDS positions, should NOT have to pay it back.

It was AF/A1 and AFPC's SNAFU that let them go in the first place. Now they need to fill 1,600 jobs?!?!? Let them get back in with no penalty--it's not the VSPers fault!

I sincerely hope it is not the "bait and switch." I would be willing to sign up if: 1) I stay in the C-17, 2)Stay at Dover, 3) have my reserve job still available in 3 years, and 4) Deploy ONLY when the squadron deploys. If signing up makes me eligible for a 179 day CAOC deployment, then the answer is no.

Is there anybody here in the know that might be able so shed some light on lateral transfers to fill these jobs? I'm curious too.. if you come in to fill one of the ISR C-12 jobs, can you transfer later over to another platform?

i don't blame you. 179? more like a 365 right off the bat...now that's a nice "staff" job for someone.

i think it would be foolish to just assume they will invite people back and give them the choicest assignments. they aren't idiots......well, maybe they are but you'll still get screwed unless you look at 365s/alo/uavs/etc. as good deals.
