Getting Sucked Into A Jet Engine

I don't normally watch Dateline (except for when they try to trap pedophiles), but this series about Close Calls made my stomach turn a little. This guy was sucked into the intake and somehow survived.

seen that vid many times, never saw the personal accounts, weird though, i had always heard that one of the straps on his vest got caught on a probe or something, and thats why he survived....but if this is what really happened, that is even more incredible

I know about a lot of those mishaps that are shown in that clip. I went to Aviation Safety Commander's Course with the BN in that A-6. He said that they had no idea what had happened when they were told to shut down until they saw the sailor being helped away from the jet! The Hornet ramp strike that the video shows we were just discussing the other day because one of the LSOs on the platform is in my squadron. OUCH!

And a laundry bill

Heard about a ground crewman who started getting pulled into a KC-135 engine, but his "mickey mouse" ear protectors departed first, causing a compressor stall which blew him back out. He was OK, except for temporary hearing loss.

I heard about that same incident at a safety conference last year. Not sure I entirely understood how it caused the compressor to stall but your right he only had temporary hearing loss.

Lots of moving parts on those carriers, here's one that involved a buddy of mine. Make for an interesting narrative over beers:

HSLD--

I just saw Master a few weeks ago when he had an overnight in DC. Say hi to him for me next time you see him--he'll know who I am.

well if something interfers with the compressor's sucking air in (in this case completely destroying 1 or more low pressure turbines) to the point that incoming air is not sufficient enough to continue pushing the high pressure air through the engine then BAM.
