Manas to close?????

U.S.: Talks on Kyrgyz base to continue - Air Force News, news from Iraq - Air Force Times

Thoughts?

On my last deployment there, Manas was a cash cow for the country. They charged for every flight plan filed, parking was crazy expensive etc. I haven't heard anything so might just be a bargaining ploy by the government to extort more money.

Didn't we go thru this a couple years ago? They threatened to close Manas down, and relented when we offered to pay more. Supply and demand. Or extortion, whichever you wish to call it.

Basically the Russians are paying off the Kyrgs to throws us out. Article I read said the Russians were offering the 300 million in aid.... and on the same day the Kyrgs announced they would not renew the lease agreement....imagine that.

The Russians want their base back. They are offerring to double the US's offer.

It's been in the news. I'll try to find a link if I can.

Krygyz leader says money behind Manas closing - Air Force News, news from Iraq - Air Force Times

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan — Kyrgyzstan’s president says the decision to close a key U.S. base was taken for purely economic reasons.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said Wednesday that repeated appeals to the United States to pay more for rental of the base went unheeded.

Bakiyev shocked Washington last week when he announced the closure of the Manas air base, which is a crucial staging post for coalition operations in Afghanistan.

Announcement of the closure came shortly after Russia offered to give the impoverished Central Asian nation more than $2.1 billion in loans and aid. Moscow has long resented U.S. military presence in the former Soviet nation.

The U.S. began using the Manas base in December 2001.
Basically he's just sayin' it's all about da Benjamins.

The nerve...
