Invites for Google voice are tough to get apparently. They are currently giving out invites to military email addresses. I got one, and it seems handy for deployers among other things.

How would you use this on deployment? Maybe get transferred by a local base to your GV number then transfer out from there?

In short, if you have a number overseas, you use the website to trigger a call from your home phone stateside to the foreign number. I use GV this way all the time to have my home phone call the hotel in Japan - all for 2 cents per minute. Send a text (again with GV) to advise the room number or extension, then start the call.
