The Right Stuff
Glad to see them get the Congressional Gold Medal finally. I think it's a long overdue honor. Dorothy Olsen lives not too far from my coffee shop. :)
From Seattle Times: They were mavericks of their day, taking to the skies when the nation was at war and most women were at home caring for families. At a ceremony this spring, 11 Washington women will join the 200-some surviving Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) in receiving Congressional Gold Medals for service during World War II. Good on them, I hope they all enjoy the moment and the re-living of the memories. I also hope they enjoy the well-deserved attention they are getting.

Jacqueline Cochran -" United States aviator who held several speed records and headed the women's Air Force pilots in World War II (1910-1980)" was a class act and a real leader. Good role model for any aviator, as a kid liked her better than some other popular and more well known pioneers.

TOO Many years ago when I was an aviation cadet in flight training, a flight surgeon invited me to go sailing with his family. With a grand total of 25 flight hours, I felt highly qualified to discuss my experiences. Mrs. "Flight Surgeon's" comments indicted she may have flown before. I asked her if she had soloed. She replied yes then talked about her two thousand hours ferrying most of the WWII "hot" fighters. I returned to base dragging my "ego" behind me at the end of a long rope.
These WASP women were (are) an amazing group of pilots. |
If you have a daughter, teach her to fly!

Very proud of them - but the news media messed up the introduction both in words - " Congressional Gold Medal of Honor" and in the backdrop picture.
As noted in the actual story and the video - this is the award so rightly deserved. Congressional Gold Medal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia USMCFLYR |
I'd wager most of them would trade the medal for a few more hours in a BT-13. :)
