AD to ART (USAFR) and terminal leave
Long time reader, first time writter. Does anybody know if you can be on terminal leave from active duty and also be employed as an ART at the same time? If so, is that written in an AFI anywhere? I am not palace chasing, I have no commitment left. I know I can't do traditional reserve until my DOS, but I'm not sure about the ART job. I was originally told yes by my reserve recruiter and now they are not sure. They can't seem to find the answer in writing. If it's possible obviously were talking about some extra income for a while.

a buddy separated with me, went into an ART position, he had to wait until his sep date, when he resigned his AD commission and then was sworn into AFRES

I believe you have to be a drilling member of the Reserves as a condition for ART employment.

One of my guys works for NGA and is coming off Mob orders and wants to go back to work while on leave. During ALL of his research he found that the Govt MAY allow you to work in a GS or NSPS capacity while on terminal leave. However, I would bet they will be conservative and tell you no.

If you don't need the terminal leave to reach 20 years, can you go back and have them cash it out and release you immediately? IIRC when I got out I had the option of taking terminal leave or cashing it out. Most folks take the leave to keep the benefits flowing, but in your case...

When I separated, I had to wait until after finishing terminal leave to start with the reserves. You will also need to get a reserve commission, which could take a few months. Hopefully, your recruiter has started that process.

Thanks guys.

Don't cash out. It'll take you 6 months to get into the job anyway.

Also, do yourself a favor and be looking for an AGR job. Benefits, retirement, pay, etc. are much better. I've been both. AGR is the way to go. Good luck.
