Visiting an ANG unit
Last year I interviewed for an F-16 slot at an ANG unit in WI. (I didn't get the job but I learned a lot about the ANG and know now that is what I really want to do.) During the interview they suggested to us that if we didn't get hired, we should try again next year as well as try and visit the unit a few times in the mean time. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion as to how I should go about setting up a visit like that? Thanks for you help.

Go to baseops.net Lots of good info on ANG units with contacts (click on aviation jobs). You want to make contacts with folks in Operations and the flying squadron. Seek out the squadron commander, chief of training in ops, deputy commander of operations, etc. Most often the contacts listed in the ANG job postings are the ones doing the selection - a great place to start. |
Since you've gotten your foot in the door, and presumably have some contacts there now, find out when the Drill weekends are. Attend as many as you can (well, at least the socializing/beer drinking aspects of them). Though, it wouldn't hurt to call and ask when the best times to hang out would be. You may even be invited to attend some of their training briefings. There are usually a lot of the part-timers around then as well, so you will have the chance to meet much of the squadron.
Also realize the enlisted folks there who are pursuing pilot slots have a leg up on you, so it's important for the unit to get to know you before you just show up for an interview. Show interest and enthusiasm, but don't be annoying. I'd say 1 or 2 days/month over drill weekend would fit the bill... |
