I'm an off the street UPT candidate in the ANG, and I got approval from my commander to get LASIK. It's a simple waiver, a lot of the info online is outdated. Good luck.

Lasik is disqualifying to start training in the Navy. There is a study in progress. "NO WAIVERS FOR LASIK in students, CLASS I, or CLASS II ARE GRANTED OUTSIDE OF THIS STUDY."

My advice to you, it to not listen to a bunch of pilots on a forum. Most of what we know is heresay.

Here is the USN Waiver Guide.

That's all great but when I went through brooks there was nothing in AFI 48-123, about the AF waiving up to 20/200 or +-3.00. All it said was that you needed 20/70 or +-1.50 to pass the physical.

So again, unless any of you are flight docs at Brooks (or Wright-Patt...where ever they do MFS these days), then I would take whatever anyone says here with a grain of salt. I would let the real docs tell me yes or no.

Another thing i forgot to mention is that im 25. By my calculation im running out of time extremely quickly! I'll be 26 in october and 27 when i finish my bachelors. i'll have 2 yrs 10 months to get into a UPT not to mention the time it takes to getting accepted. Any advice on the best road to take? I know its best to have PPL and some flying time which im currently trying to save up some money so I can get that done soon. If im not able to get in the air before I apply will there be any chance of me getting accepted? Is this eve the best avenue for me? When I was reading on UPT it seems that everyone that goes through it is trying to be a fighter pilot. Although of coarse i would absolutly love to be one, idk if its too late for me to pursue something like that. My number one goal is to fly. Is the competition the same for people wanting to be pilots but not necessarily fighter pilots?

In the AF you have until your 30th birthday to START pilot training. If you truly just want to fly for military and unless you are dead set on flying just for a particular service, I would apply everywhere! Apply with the AF/Guard/Reserve/Navy/Marines. With the Guard/Reserve, apply at every base that will take your packet. But be ready to move to the location if they require.

Flight time is desired, not required. I will caveat that with, some bases require a private. But, if you have your private, I wouldn't go out wasting money just to get a few more hours for an interview board. You are not going to impress anyone and the AF will teach you how they want you to fly.

Flying fighters is awesome but I think flying Helos with be awesome as well. Landing a C-17 on a dirst strip sounds like a blast...flying a tanker to all the garden spot of the world and partying sounds like a blast to me as well! Not everyone that goes to pilot training wants to fly fighters. Every mission is important and everyone contributes to the cause. Each airframe has it's ups and downs.

Forgive me if you already know this info but base on this question, I will assume that you don't.

All of pilot training is a competition. In T-6s everyone is competing to track the way they want. You are racked and stacked based on tests scores, flying grades, officership, etc. Finish number one and you pretty much have the pick of what you want. There have been plenty of number one guys from T-6s/T-37s that have chosen not to go to fighters. You pick from the following "tracks"...unless you go to Sheppard, where everyone goes T-38s. Things have changed and now they are pulling guys to fly heavies/UAVs from T-38s but generally the following is true.

T-1 = Heavies (Tankers, Cargo, etc...)
T-38 = Fighter/Bomber
T-44 = C-130s (may be going away soon...in which case you go to T-1s)
UH-1 = Helos

Once you get into your track, the competition starts all over. Now you are competing for the airframe that wish to fly.

The thing to remember that even though you are competing for what you want...be sure to be a good bro. Help out your bros or your IPs will notice and you will get what's coming to you. Cooperate to graduate!

Goodluck!

Actually no I don't. I don't come from a family of pilots or anything remotely close. When I read on this forum and other sites I constantly have to google different acronyms and names of tests to find out what you guys are talking about. It's a little hard sometimes but it's all good. In the end I figure it out. I appreciate your help crewdawg! I wish I had friends like you around be I'll live. Live in the Austin tx area by any chance? Anyone else reading this live around here?

I feel ya, I was in your shoes a few years back. I learned it all on my own as well. I learned all my stuff through a few UPT journals (of students currently in training) and a few other sites.

That's the way to do it. Check out these sites. If you haven't seen these yet, I would spend an afternoon on them just reading. Wantscheck pretty much has all you need. If you go to baseops (the second link), I would spend a lot of time reading and searching around....because your answer most likely has been asked, and answered, before. These guys get their panties in a wad and get at E-thug on you if you ask a question that was asked six years ago... Oh and their search function sucks, so be vague..that works the best.

No man, but back in pilot training, I spent a lot of time down on the 6th! Nice area though!

I know you Texans don't wanna leave the motherland, so off the top of my head there is a Reserve F-16, Guard C-130, Navy Reserve F-18, Navy C-130s (?) in Ft Worth. Guard F-16s and C-5s down in San Antonio. Start visiting if you think you want to fly any of those. Don't be afraid to visit the unit.

MusDg 04-16-2011 11:17 AM

In my 3+ years at IFS I have had just about a dozen students with LASIK. As far as the Air Force is concerned you can have it. Don't know what or if there is a waiver process but you can have it and still fly in the military.

MusDg 04-16-2011 11:19 AM

The C5 unit in San Antonio is actively hiring right now.
