Furlough recall while on Military leave
Yup, got the recall letter, I accepted and their website now shows me scheduled for refresher ground training and to report in February. Only problem is that I have 8 months left in Afghanistan. What should I do? I feel like I’m entitled to be put back on the seniority starting in February.

Your title reads..."Furlough recall while on Military leave" but if you are furloughed you aren't on leave. You are furloughed. I would think that your leave would start when they recalled you and you told them you weren't available due to a military obligation and this would start your military leave time a.k.a USEERA...OBTW, your type of orders in the Stan may be exempt from the five year limit.
Did you tell them you would accept the recall? If so, they think you are ready for training.
From my understanding, and depending on your contract, by telling them you are still working for them but you are on military leave, your seniority clock would still be running while you are on leave.
You need to tell them you are on leave IAW USEERA and be prepared to produce orders if asked.
Maybe I am reading your post wrong, but that is my understanding.

I am/was in a similar boat. I was furloughed from World, and while on the street, I accepted military orders under a 3-yr contract (the Rated Recall of 2009). When World recalled me, I immediately sent them a copy of my EAD orders, and now I show "Mil LOA" on the seniority list. No big deal.

Sorry for the confusion. If a company begins recalls and expects us back to training in Feb and I tell them to wait until I get back in July, am I building seniority between Feb and July while in Afghanistan? I just need to provide my orders, is this correct?

Yes just tell them you are on extended military duty and provide them a copy of your orders. You should not lose out on any seniority or upgrade opportunities becuase of Mil leave under USERA. In July when you complete your duty then inform them you want to start training. They may waffle a bit if there is no training class available then but you should be able to persuade them to have a class for you when you are finished with your duty and ready to begin training. I was activated after 9/11 for 1 year and went back all by myself in training on a new airplane type.

1) Your intention to accept recall effective with the first available class date (do this to make sure your seniority starts as soon as possible).
2) The fact that you will be on mil leave starting on your first available class date. Give the APPROXIMATE end date of your orders, and tell them that you will contact them when you are ready to return to work.
Don't give them a hard return date yet, you might get extended and you also get 90 days off after you leave long-term AD before you have to return to work (if you so desire).
I would do it certified mail, return receipt.
Yes, you will build seniority from the first available class date but document the fact that you you are accepting the first recall date (only to instantly depart on MIL leave).
No, you don't need to show them orders. They will sometimes ask, and you have two choices...
- Give them a copy, if you don't mind the granola crunching, leftist-sympth admin assistant forwarding your "top secret" military document to wikileaks.
- Tell them to contact the CO of your reserve unit.
I give them a copy after I black out everything indicating where I'm going, where I live, or what my MOS is.

United?
Not sure who you fly for, but if it is United, email a copy of your orders (PDF file) to WHQ.
If you are inded UAL, send me a PM, and I'll provide the email address/name of who to send it to.
I would do this in addition to the certified mail the others talked about. WHen I was a Reservist (1998-2010), and now on AD, I have used the email option with United, no problem.

Hey Phlyer, I'll be in the same boat soon if current trends continue. Is this really a "recall" that we can accept and then go on immediate MIL Leave (not even show up)? Or is it a "new hire offer" that we can either accept or reject? I've been confused about this. My hunch is it's a job offer and not a recall, which would mean one would have to actually show up and begin work before you could take MIL Leave. Am I wrong?
Thanks,
Rick

If your talking the CAL offer for UAL furloughed the answer is "NO"... its not a recall to mil leave option... its a new hire offer with option to differ until you come off orders. In other words.. you don't get an ID, you don't get to accrue seniority, and you don't get any retirement benefits during the time you are offered/accept to actually starting.

What I did
I bypassed in 2005. In 2007, when they came back up the list, I accepted. (I was in the Reserves at the time; a part-timer).
I went to TK for a 3-day "Welcome back" training session. Then I went on mil-leave. I was working two weeks a month in the Reserves, so they said it wasn't worth their time to train me.
When I went to full-time Active, I just updated my status.
Just guessing, but I think you could do the same at L-CAL, if it fits your situation. (ie, if you can get away from the mil-gig for a few days to "start" your 'new-hire' classes).
