Two Navy Pilots Among Dead In Coronado

From Associated Press:

Two Navy pilots were among four people found dead in a New Year's Day shooting at a tony condominium on San Diego Bay, a military spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday.
Marine Corps spokeswoman 1st Lt. Maureen Dooley said the two Navy pilots were stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. She said the military was not releasing any details yet.
It was still not clear what prompted the shooting. Officials found a dead man in the doorway to the three-story condo in Coronado and the bodies of two men and a woman inside in different areas.
San Diego County sheriff's investigators have said there were no suspects but declined to say whether they believe it was a murder-suicide. The sheriff's homicide team did not immediately return calls.
The condo is located a few blocks from the famed Hotel del Coronado and a block from the main street lined with boutiques and restaurants. Homicides are rare in the affluent resort town - just one was recorded in 2010.
Tom Reis of Bakersfield said his two children were among the dead - his 24-year-old daughter Karen Reis, and his 25-year-old son, David, who was one of the Navy pilots.
"He just had his first F/A-18 flight," Tom Reis said. "Oh man, he loved it."
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the fourth person was a 31-year-old man from Chula Vista.
David Reis held a mechanical engineering degree from the University of New Mexico and had just taken his first flight aboard an F/A-18 fighter jet. His sister, Karen, graduated from the University of California, San Diego, in 2009 and stayed in the area, coaching volleyball and working at a grocery store.
"It's still a shocker," said Rebecca Bailey, 26, who played college volleyball with Karen Reis and later coached with her at a high school and club program. "This kind of thing doesn't happen to people like her and David. Their family is the family everybody wants to be a part of. They're just so loving, and there's so much love in their family."
Neighbor Don Hubbard said he was awakened by shots that he thought were fired by New Year's revelers. He went back to sleep, but two hours later got a phone call and heard SWAT teams swarming the area.
Hubbard, a retired Navy commander, said he saw the body of one man in the condo doorway and recognized him as his neighbor - a Navy pilot receiving training at Miramar.
"I knew these guys were pilots because I was one and we'd talk about airplanes," Hubbard said. "Even now, you say, how could this have happened? What the hell is going on here?"
Coronado is home to Naval Air Station North Island and is a haven for Navy retirees.

This is eerie. It reminds of a very similar incident 20 years ago, also in Coronado, involving a navy guy who I knew. He was a bit of a ladies man (seal, annapolis quarterback) and it caught up with him. I found out about it when I opened up the newspaper the next morning.

I'm guessing the same scenario this time...relationship gone bad.

Sorry to hear about this. I read about it first thing this morning myself and had the same thought.

Four shot dead in Coronado,CA | Air Warriors

Link this morning in San Diego says they are not looking for suspects. Sound like a murder-suicide. The Chula Vista 31 year old as the culprit is what it seems they are alluding to.

Sad day for Naval Aviators. Your Air Force brothers have you in our prayers.

I remember the 1993 muders/suicide of the 3 Naval Officers at the amphib base in Coronado. I was stashed at Top Gun at the time.

It looks like one of the naval pilots, LTJG John Robert Reeves, murdered the other three then killed himself. Could be another lovers quarrel...sad regardless.

Navy pilots gunned down in San Diego slay were part of a murder-suicide, autopsy shows - NY Daily News

San Diego officials say a New Year's Day shooting that left four dead at a condominium was a murder-suicide involving a 25-year-old Navy pilot who killed himself.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department says autopsy results show 25-year-old John Robert Reeves shot himself in the head, and the three others with him were murdered.

Officials say a fellow Navy pilot, 25-year-old David Reis, was killed by a gunshot wound to the torso and his 24-year-old sister, Karen, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and chest. A 31-year-old Chula Vista man, Matthew Saturley, was shot multiple times.

Officials released no details on the motive of the killings.
