Mil Leave
 

Hypothetically speaking, how long does it usually take to make it through training before I get my line number, and I can start taking mil leave?

Day 1...The day you show up on property and sign all the paperwork you are technically an employee. Now it may take a bit to get you in CASS for the jumpseat or in the system for travel purposes, but day 1 you technically are considered employed at the company. Usually then you should get your ID, or shortly there after as well. Hope this helps!

I'd say if you are planning on taking military leave on day 2 that you aren't going to have a lot of friends at the airline. Never said it wasn't legal, but just realize that you've certainly highlighted yourself and possibly others at your unit.

Technically you could show up for class at 0800, notify them that you are going on mil leave and walk out at 0805 with your seniority clock ticking away..

If you are talking about monthly drill or AT, you will want to finish training first for your own benefit (including IOE), although you may be able to drill if you have gaps between class/sim/IOE.

If you are talking about long-term leave, yes it can legally be done. But at a small operation I suspect they would highlight you for special treatment upon your return...they might not flunk you (or they might) but it won't be fun.

If it's a large company, you might get lost in the shuffle with no adverse impact.

Now if this is a good faith situation, ie you got INVOL orders after you applied for the job then I would show up for class and explain the situation. Most companies would be fine with that.

But if you're taking voluntary leave just to doge first-year pay, they will not be too sympathetic.

Started a month of MIL leave after completing Indoc/systems and before sim. No complaints from the company, and I work for one that treats their employees like dirt (RAH.)

They really don't have much of a choice. If you ever have any problems, have your unit put you in touch with JAG. PM me if you have any other questions.

No one said it wasn't "legal". I will say things like this can come back to haunt others in your unit that are also looking for a job at the same employer.

Just be careful - getting hired requires internal references. Getting hired and going straight to mil leave might make it harder for your reference to get anyone else hired.

I could be wrong, but if I recall at RAH, we didn't pay dues until we passed our initial checkride and started or finished IOE. If you were to take MIL at any point prior to your check, you would not accrue any seniority toward bidding. Again, I am stretching my memory, and could be wrong.
