My wife was at McGuire before she left active duty; she and a few other friends had houses in Point Pleasant. We loved everything about that town except the taxes and local politics. Great year-round places (Broadway, Frankie's, were a couple of our favs); the boardwalk, our neighborhood was walkable to groceries, beer, etc. We rode our bikes to the beach and bars constantly.
Also has NJT service to NYC if you need to get away without driving. Good luck finding your spot.

XLtoneAU,
I cannot stress to you to take a good look at the Shore area. I live in Toms River, East of McGuire, it takes me 40 minutes max to drive to the base (26 miles) I'm a New Yorker so for the life of me I can't fathom why anybody would not want to live close to New York as opposed to dumpy Philly, or the shore!. Remember the Jersey Shore is really divided into 2 areas, the southern parts are where the "Philly" folks go to and they are traditional shore towns, meaning that they are very active in the summer and shut down for the winter. The more northern shore areas are destinations for "New Yorkers" and are in more built up suburbs, these shore towns tend to stay busy all year round. The Jersey Shore is awesome (despite the TV show) Unless you have a reason to live near Philly take a good look at the eastern side of McGuire, alot nicer, closer to a Real City and near the shore!! You'll enjoy Jersey, I;ve been here at McGuire since 1987 and everyone complains about the base, but they all seem to stay because of the area and especially the proximity to NYC and Phillly airports for future airline careers.

I liked 3 years in Mt. Laurel, was 5 mins from my hangar at So Jersey Airport/VAY. Easy to get anywhere. Wouldn't commute to Philly though. Might really look at Bordentown train access for your wife's schooling. IF you are in town, drop her off and pick her up at the train. If not, then she just needs a car ready for the early dark winter months.
If you don't train in from a Trenton connection, I think the connection on the River line is in Camden. Might want to try the options on trains with her on a visit before you pick an area to live in.
"Live in the Ms" used to be the saying for McGuire- Mt Holly (as described), Marlton, Medford, Mt Laurel, etc. This is for those that don't fall in love w/ the shore. I had family there, didn't need to commute it every day. If you are big city old neighborhood, the frau lived in Haddonfield for years, it was nice except for the borders on the wrong side. Easy train rides to Philly. Would be a longer commute for you, but will you be TDY 180 days a year and will that matter to you?

We lived in Lumberton for 4 years (after living in Mt. Laurel for 1 yr) and really enjoyed it. We have 3 kids, so Lumberton was great because of the houses/neighborhoods and schools. We lived in the Bobby's Run Area. There are actually two parts to Bobby's run, so don't forget to look on the Municipal drive (near the police/fire stations and courthouse) side of it. The schools were great there. Neighbors were awesome! Most of the houses are 3/4 bedroom. If you don't have kids or aren't planning on it, then maybe a smaller house/townhouse/apartment in Mt Laurel would be better. Lumberton to WRI: 25 mins door to door.

The Shore is the place if you like the beach and fun. Belmar, Wall, Bradley Beach are all great places to live and have a family.
Only 40-45 minutes from door to Squadron, and just a few traffic lights.
Freehold Township (my hometown) is also 40 min and has great schools.
16th Ave/County Rd 18 E to Trenton, NJ 08641 - Google Maps

Burlington Township, that surrounds Burlington (where you probably don't want to live), is not bad... nice neighborhoods, schools, quick access to turnpike, bridges, and train to NYC, not too close or far away from anything (except maybe the shore). Backroads commute to WRI with little traffic. Excellent Wa-Wa per capita.

XLtoneAU, I'm looking to lease a condo to a renter in Mt Laurel NJ 1 November ish. Smack dab in the middle of McGu and Center City Philadelphia. Great area and the condo is full of upgrades and certainly a couple of steps up compared to apartment life. Let me know if you are interested. I'm an ex 514th guy, presently ANG at KWRI.

I just recently graduated UPT, and will be heading to McGuire in December. Looking for ideas of places to live, as well as apartment vs condo living.
I am engaged to a elementary school teacher but no plans on having any kids yet! I have heard the M-towns are nice areas to live. Thanks!
