More lip service until we see action.

As someone said on Baseops.net, I hate the title of this. We don't need a break. A break is going to consist of less flying and more "resiliency days". You're kidding yourself if you think we're just going to get more time off.

We don't need a break from our jobs; it's what we all signed up to do. We need a break from the bull****. This seems to be quite the "about face" for Gen Johns. When he was at my base questioning why our community's proficiency was lacking, a major, (well endowed in the testicular region), layed it out. Lt's are consumed with doing AAD's before their capt board, volunteering with everything under the sun, but unfortunately, not with learning their aircraft. Gen Johns's response was something to the effect of, "well, I did it, so why can't you." After a brief search of his bio, you'll find he didn't get a master's degree until two years after he pinned on O-4.

Any "shift of workload" that takes away training in the aircraft, not the sim, is exactly what we don't need. My community keeps doing stupid **** that gets us highlighted in a negative way. Yet every experienced IP is forced to seek additional "opportunities to excel" so that we don't get left behind on our O-4 board. So just about the time one reaches IP/lead AD, comes the inevitable "you're too old for that flying nonsense". It's now time for some broadening, off to the wing or staff or RPA's with you. God forbid you stay in the squadron and teach your replacements or help to build a proficient group of copilots. When will the AF realize that we need silverbacks in the sq to teach the young. I've heard more than one sq/cc state "why should we pay a LtCol to do what a Capt can do?"

The train is rounding the corner. I was at ATA last October where the AFPC commander stated that, predicted unprecedented airline hiring was an assumption, and he's not in the business of making assumptions, but if it does happen, the USAF, will react accordingly.

11 years of war coming to a close (God willing), ten year ADSC's expiring, more "bills" being payed every assignment cycle, the Budget Control Act (Sequestration) hitting in Jan '13, Defense Business Board proposals to rape the pension, captains getting tagged with 365's (not prior enlisted), nevermind airline hiring; there's a freight train bearing down on you mother Air Force, the light is glaring and the horn is blowing.

I remember when T Mike said, right before he got punted, that he wanted to see ancillary training cut to 90min.

Still the funniest joke I've heard in the AF.

The only way to win the game is not to play.

Let's not forget John Jumper's, "If the AF wanted you to have a Masters Degree, we'd send you to get one. Otherwise, spend your time on becoming a better pilot and your family."

Worked great until T Mike showed up and reversed course.

Interesting article. This coming right before the general retires (Nov I believe). During his tenure, I've experience more of the "do more, with less" than I have in my career. Ops tempo remains at an all time high. Ancillary training is, by far, worse than I've every experienced.

Have a nice retirement...

I remember a Vol 1 re-write several years ago where one of our reserve guys stood up and said something to the effect of, "We get one weekend a month, two weeks a year - add that up and it's 96 hours. If we do all this bull**** ground training, it's over 75 hours - and we haven't started flying yet. So, if you want us to actually do this crap and not just pencil whip it, because we have to, make it a little bit more realistic."

AFSO21 or LEAN-AF is going to save the day. Just like TQM in the '90s. Just like when computers ushered in the "paperless Air Force". All that meant was, "Use your paper, not ours" - well, now it's time; "Waste your time, not ours".
