I'm in the process of transferring my military logbooks into Safelog and I think I have it all figured out with one exception. I have a P-3/EP-3 background and I know that once you are designated to sign for the plane you log PIC time regardless of whether you are at the controls or not. It is also my understanding that all flights after I got my copilot designation I should be logged with SIC time. Do the same rules apply? Do I get to log SIC time for the entire flight duration, including when I was sleeping in the back? Thanks!

I worked it the other way by determining what time wasn't PIC. Other, student, co-pilot, etc and I was conservative. I did a simple spreadsheet to help me on the math and I kept a copy available if I had to defend the numbers. A few hundered hours probably won't make a big difference versus getting caught padding your numbers.

Thanks for the responses. I logged a few months of flights with SIC for the whole time (including rack time) before the question even occurred to me so I'll probably go back and just drop my SIC time down to include only the time I spent in the seat each flight.

FAR Part 1 definition: "Second in command means a pilot who is designated to be second in command of an aircraft during flight time."
Bottom line (for me personally) is, can you defend how you logged your flight time in an interview? If not I'd be hesitant to log anything outside the legal definitions of the FARs. That said, different companies have differing guidance on how to translate military times, usually published on their website.

I don't include "Other" time in my TT. My TT is simply Primary & Secondary. I have the 781 & FA for each sortie I signed for the jet (A Code), hence, my PIC time. I'm a 2000 hour (rated) guy. My times are lower than my peers, but my numbers are conservative and easily defended. I agree with FlyFastLiveSlow: a couple of hundred hours probably won't matter. And this, coming from a guy with, on average, much less time than his O-4 heavy driver peers.
