Afraid of "Blimps"
 

During WWII (yes I am that old) Navy "Blimps" patrolled the New England coast looking for German submarines. As a five year old I was petrified when they flew over. Looks like I will have to seek counseling or take medication: here they come again.:eek::eek::eek:

OK Who is the Navy smart***. Less then an hour ago I posted about Navy Blimps during WWII. My wife just came in the house and said grab the camera; guess what is flying over (Ocala, FL) . I got to get some tranquilizers.

If you look close you'll see the pilots are wearing black suits and RayBans.

The story gets more convoluted. It appears the Navy "blimp" is being operated by the Army. :confused::confused:

"By using the airship[,] the Army will be able evaluate the performance of current and future sensor payloads," Pollachek said. "The total length of time that the system will spend at APG has not been established yet."

The office in charge of the blimp is part of the Army's C4ISR division, which underwent a major expansion after BRAC.

How low do you have to score in pilot training to get awarded airships?

Depends. Is it a remote control airship?

Slightly above RPVs. (said in jest with great respect for the RPV folks who are taking out more terrorists leaders then the fighter crowd.

I live in New Jersy by Lakehurst NAS, and its quite common to see airships flying around, especially the advertising/camera ships. It is odd as they pass slowly over my house, so quiet

Not sure how many the "fighter crowd" is taking out; but the fighter/attack and attack crowds are doing good work :D

Considering right now, its civilian operated, doubt it possible. The Navy ship (MZ-3A) is COTS program at its core. It's an American Blimp Corporation A170. The ship flies decent, could have a little more power, but it's a nice airship. I don't fly the Navy one, but I'm in the only other A170 flying right now (in the avatar).

Not really. Even from 1000 feet, you can't see too much of whats going on, other than what the camera onboard is looking at. NASCAR is the easiest sport to follow from the airship.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated from any source to rain death and destruction down on our nation's enemies :D

KS - you said something recently in another thread that led me to believe that you weren't having the best time in the airship business.
How are you doing now?

It's a job. The paycheck still comes in, so that would be hard to complain about. That said, I'm starting to explore my options for getting out of it.

My career intentions aren't to fly blimps for the rest of my life. The deeper I get into the bottomless pit, the harder it will be to get out.
