As has been mentioned here many times before, look into getting a pilot training slot in an Air Guard or Reserve unit.

After you finish Air Force Pilot Training, (called UPT) you'll still have a 10yr. commitment, but it's a 'part time' commitment, and you can get a civilian flying job to build time towards an airline flying job, while flying for the Guard/Reserves too.

what I want to know is what did the OP major in. Coming to these existential questions AFTER coughing out the time and expense of a college education seems like such a non-starter is not even funny...

A lot of bases do not have aero clubs these days.

Go Guard/Reserve or go civilian only. I wouldn't recommend active duty to anyone these days.

Rush every Guard / Reserve squadron within 500 miles of where you want to live. Build time at the regionals. Live a good life.

Left AD 6 months ago for the Guard and I've never been professionally happier.

The job market's not so hot for new grads, aviation or otherwise.

One tour in the military, as an officer, will probably not hurt anyone personally or professionally.

So true. A tour in the military, officer or enlisted, would be good for anyone!

Do not join the armed services with an ulterior motive. People, pilots included, need to join because they want to be officers. If you aren't committed to that you will be miserable when you don't get what you want and you'llbe a crappy officer to boot.

Until retirement time comes up. I'm drawing a full retirement check the day after I turn 42.

Apparently nothing that requires writing cohesive sentences that explain your point.
I'm still not sure what it is he's looking to do.

For now... only a matter of time until that retirement we're all "entitled" to starts going away.
