Agreed, but it won't go away for people who already have it like me.

I certainly hope so too, but I wouldn't at all be surprised to see major changes to it... even for those currently collecting.

A military retirement is not an entitlement. It's an earned benefit. I'll assume that's why you put it in quotes, but it really burns me when I hear or see someone refer to it as an entitlement.

Agreed on all. I would be very, very surprised if there are significant changes to retirements that are already in place. The big difference is that unlike unemployment, welfare, and disability we retirees actually earned our $$. There would be a huge uproar across the board if the government decided to cut mil retirements before those handout programs that were unearned.

But, I wouldn't be surprise to see a change to future retirements. It wouldn't shock me to see new enlistees/commissionees retirement change to more if a 401K program or a system where retirement pay starts at age 60 or later.

I'm convinced once this sequester nonsense is finished, lawmakers are going to realize or say "look, you guys in the military were able to do the mission without that money, soooooooo no reason to give it back". I look at that money lopped off the top as gone forever.

Agreed as well. Future retirements need to change and I suspect they will.

I strongly disagree. Wait a few years and see how this affects readiness.

I sure hope you're right, but I'm betting units are preparing for the worst

Times are lean but we're still flying missions and keeping crews current on the airlift side. Reminds me of my first few years in early 90s when UPT flying was slahsed. I did recruiting on my last tour and retirement benefits are big part of bringing in and retaining folks. Hard to find a comparable system in today's market so in my opinion it will continue to come under greater pressure for modification especially since we've had such good ability to bring in folks that are historically the highest quality in terms of education and overall scores. Throw in a sustained good economy and things will change.
