VR

Any of you single anchor types know what's going on in the VR world? I threw my hat in the ring 2010 with no success but as I just moved into the IRR pool(Army Reserve C-12 driver) I'm ready to take another swing at it. Been looking around and it seems so silent out there possibly because of present budget woes? CFLSW website shows no boards either. Thanks.

Just guessin' but I'd think getting into a VR squadron would be tough enough IF one was a C-40 current guy, let alone Army or AF.

VR is one of the flying programs that is getting major cutbacks under sequestration.

Since DOD travel not associated with combat readiness has basically come to a standstill, VR flight hours are way down. Couple that with lots of active duty guys looking go FTS/selres as an alternate career path I don't see it getting any easier to get in.

The VR community hasn't seen those cuts yet, to my knowledge. Not like we're cancelling a season of air shows or anything. I know a couple squadrons who have taken non-current guys and army guys. If you don't know any VR guys get your google out and call the duty desk, ask for the ops phone number and go from there.

Are you willing to move or are you tracking just one squadron? A lot of it depends on location. Havnt heard of any squadron cuts due to sequester yet.

Thanks for the responses, now that I'm no longer with a unit I'm a free agent. It's good to hear the federal money problems have not made it to the FLSW......yet. Just like last time, I'm planning on calling each squadron and checking their status.

Luv,
Location is not a problem as I still have my airline travel benefits although my company is defunct and I'm no longer in CASS. I'd consider relocating as well if need be. I'm just worried about more squadrons closing as 3 have gone away recently.

The Hawaii C-20 guys have been recruiting nonstop for the last year or so, give them a call.

VR is a lot less about what you have done rather than who you know. Networking is key. Actively seek out someone who is in the unit. Start making phone calls and asking about opportunities to rush. The boards are largely predetermined.

Ding ding, the prize goes to e6b. That's exactly what I was told by the guys as I was hanging out in the wardroom when I was visiting squadrons. They do have a point matrix to make things "fair" but I've heard the skipper(given input from the others) has LOTS of say when it comes to the final selection.

Exnavy,

C-40's are going to be harder to get than C-130's. Larger navy cities are harder than the smaller ones (Jacksonville vs New Orleans). Try calling the NATOPS officers for the squadrons you're interested in.

Best of luck
