Whoever you go with do research ahead of time with squadron mates. Some ATP schools/course are much more military friendly than others.

+1

I know a guy who pink-slipped his ATP because he did not follow this advice.

All ATPs... Military friendly... Especially locations near military bases.

Default ATP Practical - Manassas VA

American Aviation at Manassas Regional Airport just started offering an ATP practical program. It is not a pilot mill school so students are a mostly older with established careers. Most instructors are active or retired military. They are using an Piper Aztec, its a bit bigger the a Seminole used by other schools in the area. The cost of the airplane and institutor is less than the other places in the area. I also understand the DPEs are former military as well. I had a tough time finding a place to take my ATP practical, wish I knew about them before I travel across the country to do it.

I was there about 2 years ago. Herb is one of the best instructors I have ever flown with, and I've been flying for a while. You might furrow your brow a little when you see you'll be staying at an annex of his house and flying out of his garage (he lives right on Stearman Field), but it's a very good program. I had some reservations about these courses taught in light twins because I had no experience in them, and hand't flown GA since college. He knew what was working for me and what wasn't almost right away, prepped me for the oral eval verbatim, and his DPE was a great guy as well. Be ready to spend more than a day & a half there like some other places, but you'll pass the practical with ease.

Has anyone here used Texas Aviation Academy in New Braunfels? Any reviews of their ATP program?

I just finished my practical in southeast VA.

I used Rob G. (USN E-2 guy) at Curtis Eads for the instruction piece. He's been doing this a while and truly enjoys general aviation and the training aspect. He is very thorough and knows how military folks approach training so he can steer you well. I would absolutely use him again.

My DPE was John Phelps (Home Page). The eval was great. Not a 'gimme', but I didn't have to build the shuttle. Know your stuff, and it's a good time. Well thought out and good pace of events. Mr. Phelps was good at 'situational questions' for depth of knowledge and decision making evaluations.

Glad it's over, and I'd use both again in a heart beat knowing what I know now.

The DPE's in the area are booking up so, don't wait too long.

Stay away from AllATP in KGTU. Newer addition to the AllATP puppymill locations apparently. Buddy of mine just went through a pretty bad experience there, discontinuance of checkride (a blessing I encouraged him to cut and run with), out 5K. Unorganized young and inexperienced time-builder CFIs (standard for part 61 fly by night ops), lack of standarization, and horrible DPE who apparently has a bad reputation in the San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos area for being military non-friendly, even as an ex-mil guy himself (I'll leave names out).

Definitively worth to seek other options for the Texas folks. I was almost gonna pull the trigger on this place and now it's back to the drawing board before my written expires in June.
