The USAF Needs More Dumb People
I posted this a few year back and it is still applicable. When I attended ACSC (Maxwell) a young bearded college professor spoke in the big "blue bedroom." Being the Vietnam Era, just his appearance seemed to affront everybody. Forty five minutes later he got a standing ovation.
He said the problem with the USAF is you don't have enough dumb (less educated) people.
Joe Smith comes out of the Tennessee Hills, gets his first pair of boots, three square meals a day, a roof over his head and a job driving the crew bus. He loves it. After about two years the NCOIC says," Joe - you got to complete your High School GED and think about attending an NCO school or taking correspondence courses.
Joe says, "Sarge - I love my job and you have told me I am one of the best crew bus drivers. I just want to drive the bus for twenty years, retire and go back to the hills and be somebody successful. Joe is passed over for promotion, and not reenlisted. He drives back to TN and passes Harry going the other way. Harry will become another of the rotating crew bus driver.
The professor than asked, "How many of you pilots out there would rather be in the cockpit right now then here listening to me in the blue bedroom ?" (Riotous applause)
The AF demands people be educated far beyond the requirements of their job and gets rid of then if they don't qualify to be a Chief Master Sargent or General - only a small percentage make it.
Why can't pilots (and crew bus drivers) make a career out of the AF job they love ? The training costs to do other wise must be horrendous.
