Lots of build-up has happened at Shindand over the past year. While it still no garden spot, it's not bad. I spent 4 months there and 8 months in Kabul in flying the Caravan. I don't really know much about i3, though. Most of them were former Air Force pilots and they spent about 3 months on / 3 months off during their contract.

That's not far off. The English training program in San Antonio lost track of many of the "students" during their time there. I wouldn't be surprised to know that most of them walked out and are living on the lam in So Cal or Canada. It was a driving reason to put the pilot training (and English training lab) back in Afghanistan (<--- opinion only).

In the early 60's PanAm had an ab-initio program in OK. 0 time thru DC-3 type. The Afgani's went nuts over the Indian girls. I'm pretty sure, somewhere near Kabul, there is a Cherokee maiden.......

I talked to a guy there. Sounded ok but the pay was about the same as all the other deployed flying jobs...and I suspect I'd rather fly ISR in a C12. They also wanted 4 months on 2 months off whereas most of the ISR gigs I've seen were based on a one to one ratio.
Send a resume. I spent five minutes writing a rather embarrassingly bad one for a different job and they called me (several months later).
As for why it's there vs. US, laugh if you want but the intent is to leave a functioning school house when we leave. They have started a PIT program. Job covers sims, academics, and flying.
Del Rio--like you Huggy I had a blast there, flew my butt off (little over 1100 Tweet sorties). And while I have fond memories, I note that I've made exactly zero effort to return there once I got paroled.

They want USAF UPT instructors. The precursor company to i3 used mostly civilians during the start up phase. High attrition rate. The military folks have usually been over there and know the hardships involved. Don't apply if you don't want to work hard- there's more involved than just teaching UPT.
