GI Bill

Hey, I'm a 7 year Air Force vet (I was a MP not a pilot). I got out and went and got all my licenses and all the CFI ratings. Im at about 900tt with 110 Multi. Was teaching for about a year and got a new job in the bay area that fell through. Now Im jobless and I don't want to go back to instructing. I haven't used my GI bill and I know I can use it to get a type rating (only certain ones). I was just wondering if I should use it and get a type rating or just suck it up and go back to instructing. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also any leads on low time pilot jobs in CA would be appreciated.

What "type" of rating are you looking for?

Can you not get your type rating AND instruct at the same time?

I also hate to say it, but getting a type rating with such low times will not help you much right now. If you have a lead on a job that requires a type rating I would talk to them about the job first and then offer to get the type (or even 50/50) if they say they will not pay to get you typed.

What I would hate to see is you getting a type and then NEVER using it.

It doesn't get any better with a handful more hours, either dude.

I'm at around 2,000, have an ATP and GI Bill, and fly piston work and some instruction. I can't get a job at a cargo outfit because they aren't hiring, and the regionals pass over me for guys with prior 121 experience.

I've considered getting a type rating, but if it hasn't helped me, it may not help you. Go work for Flying Vikings or Ahart. Suck it up, and get back to instructing the best you can to feed yourself and get your ATP minimums. I've got ins for you down there if you want them.

Upward movement is frozen. Guys who thought they were at regionals as a step up have to stay there, and guys who are instructing right now don't have anywhere to go either.

Ding...ding...ding.

You need more time. Take the job that gets you that time...especially ME time.

To supplement your income, find something you enjoy and excel there, too.

Go find a Guard unit that's hiring.....that'll be your best bet.
