Interview Advice
 

Some of you may remember me posting a few months ago for advice on getting a pilot slot in the Guard or Reserves. Well, I have an interview coming up soon, and would like some more advice if any of you can help.

I've talked to a few current members of other units who said to study up on unit history, AF core values, have questions ready, be ready to explain why you want that airframe, and that unit.

Does anyone have any other typical questions that may be presented, or general advice on the interview? I'd like to be prepared for everything I can.

Hey, I don't have any advice except asking around like you are doing because I am not experienced in that are yet! I was just going to say good luck and ask how you got an interview etc.. I am a 22 year old PPL graduating college in a couple months and would like to fly ANG reserves as well! Good Luck!

Do not mention airlines. Talk about how you plan to stay in the community, they will want a return on the UPT investment. Then follow through on that commitment. See if you can learn a little more about the mission versus the aircraft. Great advice I received while in UPT was to chose a mission versus the aircraft. Believe it or not after a certain period of time in the jet it will become your new normal. What you do with the equipment, the people you serve and serve with will likely determine your long term happiness in your position. Best of luck!

Any advice for interviewing from you pointy nose types in the guard? I've had an interview at a joint board for Eagles, they said it was a good interview, but I didn't get hired. I'm trying to make my application/approach perfect for the next board. Anything you guys picked up that might help is much appreciated!

Call Emerald Coast Interviewing Consultants. They do interview prep for a variety of areas. Their main focus is airline interview prep, but they also have a division for grad school interviews and even politicians. They also have A program for guard/reserve interviewing.

The President of the company was an F15 guard guy and current FEDEX pilot. He was an interviewer at his unit. It'll be the best $400 ever spent.

Agreed. There are other agencies out there for interview prep, but I'd be hard pressed to find one that has as much expertise as ECIC. They could probably even get you in contact with a client that has recently interviewed there.

Try to think of it as you are interviewing for an Officer/Leader position and not just a pilot position. That is what my interview a long time ago was geared around. More leadership questions than your typical questions that you would get in an airline interview.
