I watched the PC madness start to take over just before I retired in 1992. The powers that be introduced a nose art program for our aircraft that was a throwback to the WWII era nose art. The whole purpose was to instill a sense of pride and esprit into the units. Well, about four or five months into the program the PC nonsense started. One of our female crewmembers raised a stink about one of the pictures and said she didn't believe that she would be comfortable looking at it with her mother. She was deeply offended and refused to fly in that particular aircraft!! I don't know if the Air Force caved and had it removed because I retired and walked away from it all. From what I understand, it has gone down hill ever since.

Despite the AF being the youngest service, we've ironically been losing our heritage the quickest. It's a sad day when a Comm officer can wear wings. I remember when our comm/cc (a young Capt) walked in to standup the first day with his wings on his blues and a bunch of comments flew around the room. One of them was, "How'd you get those? Microsoft FlightSim?".:D

Im not sure any of this makes us a less effective AF, at least in the heavy world. We ushered in the era of CRM/TEM and we crash far fewer airplanes than we ever have in our history, and weve done away with the "tyrant" captain mentality just as the airlines have. Ive seen female pilots fly better than most men, including a C17 WIC grad that's now a DO in CHS, and is probably one of the coolest people to be around. So if that means losing dirty nose art is it really that big of a deal?
The stuff about other non-flying support jobs that are perceived to be prioritized ahead of flying airplanes is an issue that isn't really about PC. Its about everyone trying to protect their kingdom. Yes I would like to see the Air Force mission place flying above all, but that's up to leadership to decide. |
