Meet and Greet Format

To anyone that has some experience, I have tried searching for this in the threads with no luck....I have been invited for a meet and greet with a United Airlines CP, and I am not sure what to expect with regards to the format. If you have any advice or info, it would be much appreciated.

Bring a resume. It'll be short and sweet. Wear a suit. I brought a friend in for one a few months ago. Very informal. Not a lot of questions other than "tell me about yourself."

Hilltopper,
Thanks for the info... I'm looking forward to it.

^^^^^What he said. I don't think we were even in there more than 10-12 minutes total. The CP submitted his rec to my airlineapps within 24hrs.

How does one get said interview?

Network... know someone on the inside to set it up... it's how awesome your flight time is, it's about being a good guy (or gal)

If you gotta ask, you don't need to bother with asking.

George Carlin said it best: "It's a big fogging club...and you AIN'T in it!" :D

Cynical as it may be, it's all timing and luck in an occupation where you're otherwise trained to be carbon copies of each other.

All that said, I'm not bitter. I haven't compromised my moral compass or feigned my enthusiasm for anyone, in the process of getting a job. That is more than enough for me in order to look at myself and my family straight in the eye in the morning. There's more to life than sucking up.

Affability often masks incompetence. YMMV.

Now you just sound like my wife. :D

An M&G ISNT an interview if that's what you're asking. It's not a pre-interview, it's not a "silver bullet", etc. You will get an obligatory legal disclaimer right off that bat when you show up.

We need to get AlbieF15 to weigh in here

While true, treat any M&G as if it is all these things. Suit, logbook summary, resume, cover letter and above all else game face and interview mindset.

Agree fully. I just didn't want there to be confusion that a M&G IS an interview. Mine really wasn't even like talking to a recruiter at a job fair as far as a rapid fire Q&A. Much more relaxed, and a "get to know you" feel. As well as for the CP to get to talk to 1 of his thousands of pilots in the domicile.

And when I did mine, he wanted JUST a résumé.

T6 Pilot 04-19-2014 06:18 PM

Points taken on all.

Snarge 04-20-2014 04:25 AM

I recommend pilots hire a interview consulting group now... don't wait till you get the interview.... you want a deep down polish that will shine... not a last minute surface wipe down....

Emerald works, last long time....

I did the M&G just before christmas last year. Met with IAH chief.

Sat down with me and my sponsor (my padre). Asked about our family, my experience at the regionals, my future as a guard pilot/UAL pilot together, etc. I wore a suit, I asked questions about the future of UAL. I had fun with it and he put me at ease. He also answered a lot of questions that had to do with hiring process.

UAL pilots (I think) get one sponsor a year.. someone correct me if I am wrong.

Airlineapps rec showed up the same week.

Snarge 04-20-2014 06:20 PM

Told a few CPs... if you want to hire 60/month (when you get your Guppy Capt training choke figured out) you've got to interview 80+/month... I got a few guys... but you want to wait till next year for me to help you?

Stay classy UCH....

This jives with my buddy walking me into hi CPO. Said they get one silver bullet.

Jeepster8414 04-21-2014 12:12 AM

Is this (the M&G) a traditional step in the process? Seems like something that will go away as the demand/supply balance shifts in favor of the job seeker...

When that terminology was used in the past at another carrier, it WAS a guaranteed interview. It's NOT at UAL. Like I said, it's part of the legal disclaimer one will receive at an M&G.

Meet and Greet Format

What's the time frame you would hear anything about an interview or how it went in their opinion? I did one a couple weeks ago and just twiddling my thumbs wondering! Thanks!

HuggyU2 08-16-2014 08:07 PM

It depends.
With whom did you interview?

DroopsN10 08-16-2014 08:15 PM

Meet and Greet Format

Training manager in IAH. Padre as my sponsor. He had appointments all day long an hour apart so maybe he's just backed up?

HuggyU2 08-16-2014 10:08 PM

So, it was a meet and greet,..l and not the actual interview, correct?
If so, hard to say.

Correct. I know he's supposed to do some sort of recommendation but it hasn't shown up on my airline apps so I've also been wondering if it goes straight to HR.. Hmm.

Sucking up is one thing. Having someone who knows you validate that you are not a self-serving jerk is another. Why should an airline take a chance on a "stranger" over someone who is recommended as a "good guy"? It's called networking and it is life. Those that say they don't play "the game" really are playing along but they enjoy hobbling along on the foot they keep shooting.

FlyHIGHgoFAST 09-26-2014 08:28 PM

Bump....

Has anyone who has done a meet n greet get a call yet? Just curious how it is all playing out.

I did a M&G in May, called in July for interview in Aug.

Bumping this thread..... I have a "Meet & Greet" this week. I am planning on wearing a suit and bringing my current resume and a copy of my airline app. Anything else I should do or bring?

Also, if all goes well and I receive a recommendation from the Chief Pilot. Does that carry more weight than a standard recommendation?

Yeah look around the chief pilots office and figure out what his poison is and next time you show up bring him a bottle. :D Which you should do on an UTA if this isn't on one to get to know the bros.

Oops, is this for a Reserve/Guard job or airline? If for Reserve/Guard the previous applies, if for airline disregard.

I had a meet and greet a few weeks ago, but have not seen anything yet on my airlineapps. Did you get a recc from the CP, and where did you see it on airlineapps? I thought the meet and greet went well, but am starting to get nervous that they forgot to submit an app for me. Thanks
