Tops in Blue: American Heros

Band members cite lack of sleep, grueling rehearsals | Air Force Times | airforcetimes.com

Thank goodness we have folks willing to sacrifice like this...

Former members of Tops in Blue said the pace of touring and rehearsing is grueling, and sleep is hard to come by.

“I wish it were 12-hour days,” Staff Sgt. Brittney Perry said when asked if Tops in Blue members regularly worked 12 hours a day. “It was normally 18 hours. It was hell. There was one [stretch] we pulled 36 hours. Because of a lack of sleep, our entire team was sick. There were a lot of injuries. A lack of sleep, it just messes with your body.”

Capt. Gavin Light agreed.

“I remember days when we got two or three hours of sleep,” he said. “As a result, people would start to make poor decisions.”
p.s. sorry for thread title misspelling. Mods, please help.

…where do we find such men?….

EvilMonkey 04-30-2014 03:33 PM

I'll be sure to pass this along to my friends in Trashganistan. I'm sure they'll be comforted to know they aren't the only ones "roughing it."

Very impressive, in all the wrong ways.

"A senior airman who drove a truck for Tops in Blue for one year agreed. Often, he said, drivers would only get three or four hours of sleep before driving for hours."

This is outrageous. Driving a truck, full of stage equipment, on such little sleep?! But you know what? He did it. He did it for those retirees and civilians. On behalf of a grateful nation, I salute you both, nameless senior airman and Brittney.

Got some popcorn in the microwave, waiting for the comments section to blow up.

Unreal.

I think this is the defining example of how "out of touch" the Air Force leadership is.

I won't debate that driving a truck for hours after 3 hours sleep sucks, and is probably more dangerous than what I do, but my question is WHY? Nobody likes Tops in Blue. The only way anybody shows up to their shows are if the commander makes it mandatory, or they have a captive audience deployed. And trust me, I've been deployed and would prefer to sleep/work-out/jerk-off rather than go see Tops in Blue. We're cutting squadrons and entire airframes, but we have enough money for this crap?

My...my.
I never realized the Tops in Blue had it so rough. I remember watching them perform for us back in 71 or 72 and they looked all fresh and relaxed while singing “Crystal Blue Persuasion” and “The Age of Aquarius.”

Why those little fakers. They were all frazzled and worn out the whole time during that show. Had I only known? My heroes! :D

Here's an example of a place in the budget where we could work to get back some of the $4.5 billion needed to keep the Hog. Who needs an entertainment group that leadership has to practically force people to go see in order to fill the stands? What a waste of money.
