Military straight to mainline
Hey guys, I was just curious if military guys usually go through the process of going through the regionals or do they usually head straight to the National- Major companies?

Historically it was usually straight to the majors, but hiring is still ramping up and there is a "backlog" of eminently qualified applicants so many mil guys are not called right away.
In that case you need to stay current (and probably make money)....guard bum, bizav, special gov contract flying, or regionals are the typical options. |
Military straight to mainline
I'm a Reserve baby (i.e. was hired off the street into the Reserves, not prior active duty), and I built my hours by horing myself out to my squad ("troughing"), then flew a couple years with Atlas. I think having some 121 time on your resume helps & lets you check another box.
With that said, I've had numerous squad mates get hired with no 121 experience...one guy which was in the first Delta new hire class. I wouldn't jump to the regionals or ACMI carriers until you've built some PIC time in your squad. Just my opinion. |
Historically, most military fixed winged aviators go straight to the majors. The military guys that I know who spent time at the regionals came from helo's and needed the multi engine fixed wing time.

Former enlisted here. I had to cut my teeth w/a regional first, but got picked up by my parent company. From 7-lvl to 7 6 in 7 years!

And pre 9-11, just like now, the mil guys going to the regional aren't there for very long. And as the hiring picks up, that time will drop even more. |
What is a competative amount of TT and PIC for a military guy?

I had 5200 hours of military flight time when I got hired.

You will probably get calls many places, but I think a legacy or major cargo carrier would pass you up. A thousand more hours at a 135 or 121 outfit and you would probably get a look.
