If I had to do it over again...
I would go C-17s, C-5s, or KC-10s...travel the world...then apply for the airlines. I would prefer the ANG/AFRES because you would know what you're getting into. Also, you won't be at the mercy of the Air Force Personnel Center who wants to "mentor" you and give you some desk job to help out your AF career. Flying fighters is a whole lot of fun, but it's a whole lot of work if you aspire for the airlines. There's not much travel with fighters...other than going to Las Vegas for Red Flag, deploying to the sandbox and getting shot at, etc...The times of the real cushy deployments has already passed...you'll be stuck earning a little over $10/day while you're TDY, and hating life. At least in the heavy world, you'll get paid more and will be able to see a lot of things us fighter guys don't. FWIW. |
Im an 04 erau grad and up until now ive been goin the airline route.. Ive always had the AFNG/AFRES in the back of my mind.. Im now waiting in a pool with a regional, but am considering military.. Is it possible to sign up while employed by a regional and start OCS, initial training, etc without leaving the company that id be at?? Would this be feasible or would i have to leave the company? thanks

I completely agree. After coming off of a sea tour where I spent 15 out of 36 month’s deployed I was "fortunate" enough to get volunteered for an IA billet 10 month’s into my shore tour. My IA was only 6 month's, but I just had a buddy in my squadron get one for over 400 day's in Iraq. At the same time the Air Force is paying guys anywhere from 90-95K to get out early because they’re overmanned. I have definitely enjoyed my time in the Navy and even after the IA billet I have no regrets, but times are changing and they're not getting better. Just my $.02.

hours a month/year/career
how many hours does a navy, marine, and/or airforce pilot average a month, year, career???
any input would be appreciated from any branch on this subject thank you for your service!! |
Here is what I have seen with the green gun club and buddies I have talked too:
Tacair AV-8B - best year 350hrs (with sand box), averaging low 200s FA-18 - best year 400hrs (with sand box), averaging mid to high 200s EA-6B - best year 450hrs (with sand box), averaging low 200s Herks - I flew 600hrs FY06 and 500hrs FY05, but total over 10yrs was 2500hrs and that was high, that is including flight school and TBS and what not though. Spent 11months DIFDEN at Pendleton in there as well. |
