Someone is busting a ride...

T-45. This one is going to be a comedy of errors, me thinks.

Could be, those are long runways. But it is a single engine jet.

Toonces 05-23-2015 07:07 AM

Long runways with arresting gear too...

Navy jet runs off runway, makes a water landing - 10News.com KGTV ABC10 San Diego

media claims plane based out of Miss. and single pilot occupant ejected and is safe and sound

Yeah tough to even comment on this one not knowing what phase of the flight...its not uncommon for the E-28 gear at KNZY to be out of battery...RWY 29 is 7500'...either way, glad the crew got out!

T45Heinous 05-23-2015 05:39 PM

Raise your hand if you've ever had a hook skip....(I'm raising mine). who knows what happened yet, but a young student naval aviator with probably around 200-300 hours total time, just had a hell of a scare, just glad the pilot is still in one piece.

E2CMaster 05-23-2015 07:02 PM

If you're hook skipping, you need to set the hook harder.

But no so hard you get an IFE.

Ok..well again we are all Monday morning QBing a SNA. I'm guessing this was a first time situation for him/her...so who knows if they even had the forethought about trying to avoid a hook skip....especially if they were on the binders trying to do a high speed abort (very easy to hookskip with all the weight forward in a T45). But like was said before, I have no insight into what was happening.

E2CMaster 05-23-2015 07:37 PM

He lived and op checked the seat. I'm sure he'll get a good callsign out of it.

BDGERJMN 05-24-2015 06:34 AM

We're making the assumption he hook skipped, he may not even have had arresting gear to stop him...

We're free to speculate and make assumptions.

What, you think this is AirWarriors? :D:D

NZY is more challenging than people give it credit for. If you land long and fast, that end comes up faster than you realize and braking is not that great. Boats, houses, rocks and SAN all right off the end of the runway can screw with your desicion making to waive off/go around too if you haven't seen it before. It's like off roading on that crappy concrete too.

MikeF16 05-26-2015 03:35 PM

I was doing a benign barrier test and at 100 kts my hook skipped the cable, it happens on paved runways.

Hook skips

Skips happen. I've had them at sea and ashore. I've watched plenty of them from the flight deck and the LSO platform. I've watched a Rhino cross the ramp, touch down just before the ace, and skip all four wires for the no grade bolt. Yep, shiznit happens.

Of course, I have no idea what happened... for instance, if the long field gear was even rigged or if the pilot was even trying for it. And no longer having access to MDRs and SIRs, I'll have to wait to see what half baked explanation comes out in the regular press.

Just glad he/she got out.

Callsign "Nemo".

"Nemo! Newcomer of orange and white...."

HuggyU2 05-27-2015 07:11 PM

"NERD"
Need extra runway, dude!

galaxy flyer 05-27-2015 07:14 PM

Can't say about T-45 landings there, but many heavy C-5 landings have gotten my attention. A 250,000# Mk5 or DSRV load circling to 18 off the SAN 29 approach at night is thrilling. Cranking by the Del to 29 heavy is also.

Just out of curiosity....was that a real Rhino or a F-18?:p;):D
