Military pilot age waivers
#3
To drill down a bit, do you mean to attend an initial Military Pilot training program? (UPT, Navy, or Army). OR, to transfer as a former military pilot to another service. Know of a former military pilot who was waivered at age 51 to join another component after being out for many long years.

As a former UPT instructor, the only guys older than the cutoff were Navs transferring to pilot. Other old guys were inter service transfers, mainly from helos. All initial, first shot at pilot training guys were under the cutoff, maybe 30 at most.

Cargo Hopeful,
Navy has always been pretty strict on the age waivers for initial training. As pointed out, only older folks (up to age 30-31) I am aware of were junior Naval Flight Officers (NFO's) who were board selected for aviator transition. Often, exceptional officers who could return to the fleet without much career interruption. Good luck!

In pilot training by the 30th birthday for the Air Force. Everyone can submit an age waiver of course. However, current guidance is you have to prove the Air Force caused the delay that put you over 30. That's the only way. I've had Nav's as upt students before that were Majors. Those days (few exceptions) are long gone. In order to go to upt, you can't have more than 5 years active service as an officer. I think this is total BS, but this guidance bit me when I tried to hire one of my WSO's that I flew with previously into our reserve unit for a upt slot.

I've only heard of 32 in AF Res and that was for a nav. Back when it was 27.5 they would not give me a waiver, but I got lucky and the age changed to 30, so I made it in at 29!
With the current climate in the AF (RIFs, etc), I'd say good luck. One place to look would be the ANG, they seem to be able to work the angles!

The only folks older than 30 I have ever seen in my time in ATC as a student and AETC as an IP are from the ARC. Those folks were already rated as Navigators and their unit was in a conversion status and losing their Nav/WSO/EWO positions as a result of their new iron. I.E. F-4s to F-16s, KC-135 avionics upgrades, C-130 E/H to J and any others I may have missed. If an active unit is converting, their Navs just get PCS'd to someplace where there are still Nav jobs. I believe in those cases the allowance is up to 34. For everybody else, the age 30 rule still applies.
