Default Automobile State Registration Fees

I am a new resident of Florida and was wondering if it would be cheaper for me to purchase a vehicle here and have it registered in Florida, or back in San Diego, California.

I tried looking into comparisons but it was rather hard to pin point any exact figures. Anyone have any experience? I know other pilots have had their vehicles registered in Oregon for some tax stuff, but that is besides my point.

You have GOT to be kidding me?!

Surely you know that California is one -if not THE highest taxed state in the Union? That applies to the DMV, too.
It will cost you 10-20 TIMES more in CA, versus FL, which is one of the most reasonable tax states.

On another note, if you are NOT a bone fide FL “resident” -for tax purposes yet .. RUN to the nearest DMV, register your car, get a driver’s license and REGISTER to vote IMMEDIATELY . .to establish your FL residency. Not necessarily in this order, are the lowest tax states. FL, TX, TN, NV, NH, OR, AZ and AK . .might have forgot 1-2. Airline pilots, due to the nature of the work and domiciles, can take advantage of lots of things, when it comes to taxation.

I have a DL but do I need to register to vote here instead of CA to fulfill my residency? I bought a house here, but its in the family name instead. And I do plan to buy a car here w/ my current home address.

Thanks for your help too!

Do you have any ties to CA? I would certainly make it so that they did not think they had any claim to that airline pay. Where are you domiciled? The more “paperwork”; DMV, voter registration, etc, you have the less likely they will come after you . . you know they are HURTING for cash. . . and you are going to be making that six figure airline salary
