Moving to a different state tax question
So I worked in New York from 1/1 - 8/31 and then moved to Texas and have been working here ever since.
NY is claiming that i owe quite a bit of money in taxes because according to my W2 i made X amount last year but they show i only paid taxes on Y amount (the amount that i made up until i moved). So according to them I didn't pay taxes on what I made from 9/1-12/31, because i was living in Texas at the time... Been trying to read up on the internet and see what the law is on this but no luck. Does anyone know? I dont think i should have to pay New York State tax from 9/1 - 12/31 because i wasnt living there... Thanks |
...If you were a resident for only part of 2009, you are subject to New York State tax on all income you received while you were a resident of the state and on income you received from New York sources while you were a nonresident. To compute the amount of tax due, use Form IT-203, Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return. You will compute a base tax as if you were a full-year resident, then determine the percentage of your income that is subject to New York State tax and the amount of tax apportioned to New York State... http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/2009/...09_fill_in.pdf |
