When I went to Delta, both cars were paid off, no credit card bills, no student loan debt, and I had saved low 5 figures in to cover the switch. I really wanted to go to a major from my cargo job, and figured it would be coming, but not sure which airline. Wife worked a bit, but not more than before. I took at 60% paycut to go to Delta, but it was worth it.

Yeah, the first two years was a lot of scrimping and delaying new items, but it's do-able.

If you can't get motivated to save and reduce debt, think how good this would sound in the interview, "I really want to work for your airline. I've paid down all my debt, paid off my cars and have money in the bank, so I ready for the first year." That sounds like a pilot who can plan ahead and make responsible choices.

Just apply at Republic and gain some seniority then you wont have to take the career sacrificing paycut, you will then be able to jump on over and keep your longevity with Frontier and skip 1st year pay! Problem solved.

But whatever you do, please do NOT leverage your credit during the good years to get your hands on things you couldn't afford if you lost your current job. Save and pay cash and then you can afford it.
Spot on! So many of the Captains I fly with are living pay check to pay check.
