I was a very loyal USAA member for many years. I really don't like to change companies that I do my banking, investment or insurance business with, but I left them in 2000.
USAA had made a decision to change their membership criteria and after that their customer service went downhill and their rates went up.
Delta has a corporate affinity program with Travelers. I used them for several years without problems. However they kept raising the replacement value of my house (and therefore the premium) beyond reason.
I very recently switched to AMICA. Thus far their customer service has been excellent.

The best way to handle this, though, is simply to shop around. The people that get stung by this are the ones who just have "faith" in USAA and do all their insuring and banking there without comparing what's available elsewhere.
Sometimes USAA (and the overall combination of services and rates) is the best option...sometimes it's not.
So far it hasn't degraded far enough to make me seek better deals for insurance.

USAA does an in house assessment every 10 years. We just had one done last year. Folks showed up, took pics, and left.
They came back with $1,000,000 replacement value (well above what I would have guessed). No increase in premium.
