Instrument Rating & All ATP School Deduction

Instrument Rating & All ATP School Deduction
I am currently employed by an air carrier and have decided to pursue the rest of my ratings. I am doing my instrument on my own, and in April I will be going to ATP for my Commercial single/multi, and CFI's. My current instructor also went to ATP and was/is a mechanic. He said that being that I already work in the industry, doing additional ratings is considered furthering my career and is therefore tax deductible. Can anyone confirm this, and recommend how I go about deducting these things from my taxes next year? Thanks.

I would say no for two reasons. The IRS is going to ask, "What is your present job?" In order to keep it as one career path, you're going to have to say, "I'm in aviation." "Fine, what do you do in aviation, what is your trade or skill set?" Flight training moves you from whatever you're doing now to being a pilot. Even if you could convince them that it's all aviation, you can't deduct the training for the basic qualifications of your job. Since a commercial is required to fly for a living, it's not a deductable expense. See IRS Pub. 970.
