Personal Item Carry On
I know the LuggageWorks / Briggs / Strongbag suitcase debate has been had multiple times on APC, so I値l leave that one alone.
However, for those of you who have been on the 7/7 commuter life for a long time, what have you found that works best for you for your additional personal carry item? Backpack? Briefcase? Small duffle, etc. If you feel strongly about one, please give a brand/model. No shame for low OR high budget options. In my former career, some people were passionate about Tumi/Briggs and others content with a old Jansport.
I rarely rarely ever airlined at my last flying job. I知 starting at NJ soon, so I have been trying to figure out what might work best for me. Always interested in the input of those who have done it for awhile.

I have a backpack "BOLD by travelpro." It has space for a laptop (I don't carry one) and strap to attach to your overnight bag. I like having a backpack because if I decide to check my roller bag, my carry-on is easy to lug around.
P.S. welcome to NJ!

I'm currrently using a backpack my son picked out that fits my stuff (computer, headset, sunglasses, water bottle) and a soft sided 22" roller bag. The backpack is so ugly but my son thought it was cool so I like it. I might go with unicorns when the current backpack wears out. I used the Luggage Works 22" and 26" for a couple years. The 26" would get rejected by the occasional gate agent and it was crazy heavy. I tried the 22" Luggage Works but found it cluncky. Then I went through two $100 Costco rollers that I loved. I currently have a $75 22" mostly cloth roller EBag that was on clearance. It's light and works great. Kid you not, I was paired with a guy that used a black Hefty trash bag. Guess I'm saying, don't over think it and don't spend a crazy amount of money. The backpack vs computer bag is again preference. The latitude forward closet will only fit a certain size computer bag. I would base it on what fit in your aircraft.
I realize you didn't ask but...
I would say 95% of NJA pilots use the Bose QC25/35 with UflyMike. The other 5% use the onboard headset or the in ear headset. It's another preference thing. I like the Bose setup because it works great for watching movies on your computer when airlining.

I use a 22" rollaboard for my clothes. Typical $100 at Kohls type of thing. My second bag is a laptop briefcase similar to this.

Over 22 years, for the "small personal item" I've been through an old school chart case, two or three backpacks, and one or two other bags. At present, I'm using a Blackhawk Range Bag. All have had pros and cons but this one fits under an airline seat better than most. Nothing is perfect.
As for rollaboard, an old school 26" Purdy Neat lasted more than a decade until the frame bent. Wicked heavy but rugged. Now using a Strongbags 24". Lighter but not as much capacity. Fits in ALMOST every mainline overhead which is good since I only check a bag when the airline holds the proverbial gun to my head.
Find yourself the lightest bag possible and really edit the clothes you drag around on the road. You'll have less layover time than you think. Pack accordingly.
Good luck and welcome to the minstrel show.
