commutair training

How's the initial training at commutair?is it pretty intense? Any good ways to get ready for it besides the stuff they give you? Thanks

num1pilot 03-21-2011 08:22 PM

Hey Jimmy, I'm assuming you just got hired. Did you get a gouge for the interview? could you give one? What were your times if you don't mind me asking?

jimmyladue 03-21-2011 09:07 PM

Identical to the one on APC, I completely over studied for it. How would you fly a flight from Montreal to BTV, finger fly the approach, altitudes and headings. How to enter the hold after the missed approach(direct). METARs, TAFs yadayada. It was so easy I kept second guessing myself thinking it was a trick question, so the best thing to do I would say is just relax, they will hire you. My times are 2500tt, 110ME, ATP and all the CFIs. Good luck.

It's just like any other airline's training. The proverbial 'drinking from a fire hose' fits pretty well. Just memorize the flows and your packet you get before you come to class. Study hard in class and don't forget to go out one or two nights a week to have fun and decompress. The instructors here are top notch and you'll learn a lot. Enjoy!

I heard they dedicate an entire day on how to properly cook and eat Ramen noodles....

And that's for the upgrade class.

beech_nut 03-23-2011 12:09 PM

Wrong

That day is on how to live an entire day on food taken from the free hotel breakfast.

That's "Survival School." Some of the techniques are borrowed from the Armed Forces Survival Handbook. Just remember that the fat grubs aren't always the most nutritious! :)

That's good thinking. I was just going to store up enough fat now so I wouldn't have to eat the first year. If you don't mind me asking, what was your average monthly take home the first year at Commut?

Steel Tiger 03-23-2011 03:36 PM

less then 1600 a month and I am going on 4th year F/O pay

Nobody else would look at you with those times or do you have some connection to Commutair?

4th year FO pay? Didn't know there was such a thing.

I had the opportunity to go to republic or AE but I decided to go with the faster upgrade. I have a wife that makes me food, puts a roof over my head, and gives me baths, so money wasn't a major factor. I want to get that PIC time before I'm thirty.

jws3443 03-23-2011 04:12 PM

well if theyve got guys on 4th year FO pay im starting to wonder if the fast upgrade isnt so fast over there...(just something to think about)

Steel Tiger 03-23-2011 09:47 PM

people average about 3 to 3 1/2 year to upgrade at the company. May be less now with the 300's but base your plans on a long term employment. NOT QUICK UPGRADE!

Haha, I was hearing upgrade time there was about 2 years or less. I turned down both eagle and republic to go to commutair. Your upgrade is just around the corner right? Or am I living in upgrade neverneverland.

I believe the longest time to upgrade was 3 to 3 1/2. Average is way less.

Let me guess, you bypassed?

Crawl 03-24-2011 03:32 PM

It's hard to judge upgrade time at any airline. You cannot predict the future, especially of an airline. Right now I think the people upgrading have been around for about 3-4 years (some are bypassing). New hires from my class just a few months ago that got based in CLE never even sat reserve and are holding a line with 14 days off. With the new planes coming and continued attrition, people are going to keep upgrading and that time is going to keep going down and down. At the current rate, it could go down to as little as a year (scary, I know) or it could just stop right where it is and go up to 5+. Who knows. Always plan for the worst, hope for the best, but really, expect the worst :-D

Steel Tiger 03-24-2011 07:08 PM

I prefer to look at it is I am unwilling to commit social and family suicide by upgrading. I enjoy my weekends off, but this is only because my financial situation allows me to do this.

Flyboy060 03-25-2011 03:44 PM

3 1/2 year upgrade here....look at all your options and don't base any decision on a quick upgrade.

jimmyladue 03-25-2011 04:17 PM

Hey. Do you have to memorize all the flows before training? Or just be familier with them. I'm sure it would be better if you did, but that's a lot of stuff to memorize.

Try not to think of it as memorizing, but actually doing... recommend hanging up your posters in some fashion that allows you to actually touch them and run through flows as if you were in the plane. Don't just sit there and try to memorize stuff.

For the memorization list items, the instructors may tell you the typical acronyms used... or you can invent your own, sometimes that works best. You will have more time to study that stuff once you're there, but the problem is that once you're there, they are going to pile up and dump more stuff on you to study and memorize every day, so it just makes life soooooo much easier to have it down pretty well beforehand. Then you essentially just review it every day to keep it up to par. Good luck!
