Every time I see a Silver thread, I'm half expecting it to be the big announcement that they are finally shutting down. Take that for what you will....

Why would they shut down. Didn't they just get bought out ?

Being bought out doesn't necessarily make a company a safe bet...
From inception, being born onto the shaky foundation that was Gulfstream Airlines, I don't think that the airline has ever found solid footing. They lost a large EAS contract out of Atlanta a few years ago due to poor performance. Which was later followed by their partnership with United Airlines dissolving. Having previously been at the very bottom of the industry in regards to pay etc, they sure haven't had the easiest time recruiting highly qualified candidates. And seem to burn through Chief Pilots at an alarming rate. Hopefully they can turn it around. But from what I've seen i wouldn't hold my breath. Being a commuter from Florida (with a family home in D.C.) I very briefly considered them as an option. However after researching the company and the origins of the company I felt that Silver would be a risky place for me to hang my proverbial hat. I have a feeling that Silver won't be able to keep up with the upward trend we're currently seeing in the rest of the regional airline industry.
Of course, all this is from the perspective of someone looking in from the outside...

Management is comprised mostly of former Gulfstream Airlines management and/or other regional airline management that have shuffled around for the majority of their careers. Management treats the pilot group poorly. The pilot group distrusts management. The Union is weak. The top of the seniority list is mostly populated with pilots that paid for their jobs and will never leave Silver (i.e., slowing your movement up the seniority list). Most every other regional is hiring, paying more, and affording greater stability, I would only recommend Silver if you lived within driving distance of Tampa or Ft Lauderdale. Even then, be prepared for an impending bankruptcy- meaning you'll have to go through the entire job search again only to be at the bottom of another list.

It will work for you if you live within a reasonable driving distance from TPA FLL or MCO due to day trips only. Pay went up to 38hr 1st year FO(I think).

Plenty of other places to fly the Saab for more money.

Maybe money isn't everything. :)
It does sound nice to not commute and be home every night.

Has anyone ever costed out the whole commuting thing in time and money ?
