Unfortunately, Tradewind had to furlough about 85% of the pilot group at the end of March due to COVID and stopped all hiring. When things start to pick up again they will exhaust the recall list before beginning to rehire. If things come back explosively that may be in the next few months, but realistically I would bet on a year to 18 months before the recall list is fully exhausted if things pick up the way they are forecast.

That’s crazy, almost went to tradewind a few months ago. So many ppl are furloughed at this time, has to be so frustrating not knowing how long this will last.

As of today, Tradewind has recalled all of the pilots on the furlough list to return to full time employment on their original salary. The schedule for the Pilatus pilots has become 4/2. Business has been picking up optimistically, with May representing 20% of last year and June 50%. With St Bart’s reopening on June 22 and more and more travel demand in the Northeast, Tradewind is well poised for a recovering summer and strong winter season.

Tradewind has been doing well, and the pilot group is very busy, most pilots are flying every day of their rotation and on several legs too. Business has been returning at encouraging rates and hopefully this winter season brings more of it. The transition from the Northeast to the Caribbean begins in the next couple of weeks with planes and pilots relocating south. A few pilots are also upgrading this fall and hopefully that will continue into the spring, maybe even run new hire classes prior to next summer if trends continue to improve. Nothing is certain in the age of coronavirus.

Yes, SJU is a full time base, but it is very small. We have fewer than a dozen pilots who are based there and openings are rare. That being said, if you are Northeast based and wanted to spend the entirety of the Caribbean season (November - April) in San Juan, that would be easy to accommodate.
