Default Hageland/Grant

Looking at both carriers, seems about even in the end as far as pay goes but Hageland has paid time off which could be attractive living in Alaska.

Any pilots that are flying for them want to chime in and tell me the goods and the bads?

Bethel sucks. Whatever you’re imagining, it’s worse than that.

I have been there before I don’t think it’s all that bad but I wasn’t raised in a city. Just can’t try and buy food there or a guy will starve quick!

That’s nine pages of guys trying to get hired, I’m looking more for guys that are currently working there. Keep hearing about lots of pilots leaving hage and going to grant.

Apply to both and make a decision if you get offers from both. Pluses and minus' with each. Grant has positive seat (purchased ticket) to get home - ravn has cass / jumpseat. A lot is happening on the Ravn side to increase safety and culture of alaska flying. Get paid even with WX and maintenance - so not pressured to fly. No idea on the grant side. A lot of applications for both companies so would say get to AK and meet some people.

After dealing with CASS at Hageland for 2 years now, I would personally go with Grant and the paid ticket home. Most people have to commute through Seattle and there are times where you will sit there all day waiting for an open seat. 95% of flights to ANC originate in SEA so it creates a sort of bottle neck for commuting pilots. I also have to plan a two day commute and pay for my own hotel and car rental so I can shop for groceries since there are none in the bush. Needless to say I’m kinda tired and pi**ed off before I even get to work. I wish I had gotten my CFI, bush flying is awesome but not an easier way to get your 1500.

100%. Commuting up there and back sucked so bad. The moment we got off the dash from Bethel in Anchorage, it was every man for himself. The peace of mind of having a guaranteed seat to and from work cannot be overstated here.

I personally find instructing much more satisfying than the flying I did up there, but I was only ever an SIC. I am sure the sled was alot more fun!
