No longer hiring

I just got the "Thanks but we are no longer looking for pilots" email from Debbie today. Guess they are full. Good luck in your class to those who got a shot!!!

mosquito 07-24-2009 04:44 PM

Any one of you that are in the Aug 24 class received the Ameriflight package in the mail? I think they said we were suppose to get it on thursday?

undflyboy06 07-24-2009 10:43 PM

You beat me to it mosquito. I was going to ask that question tonight, but decided to wait and see if it arrives tomorrow. If not, I'm going to call on Monday and see what they say.

Ok Und let me know.

mwf008 07-28-2009 02:47 PM

Does anyone in the August 24th class have a plan for living arrangements? Were you told where you would most likely be based? Just wondering how the rest of you guys/girls are handling that situation. Look forward to seeing ya'll there.

undflyboy06 07-28-2009 03:49 PM

When I talked to Debbi she asked for your base preference of either Portland or Oakland; I put down Portland. In the packet e-mail that you should be getting from her it states that we're going to be staying at the Ramada in the block of rooms they have reserved. There will be 2 occupants per room.

mwf008 07-28-2009 04:12 PM

I got that email, too. What I meant was, how is everyone planning on finding rooms or apartments once they get to their base. I was just curious if anyone is going to be looking for roommates or if they already have their living situation (once finished with training) figured out. I requested Oakland, but would be happy with Portland, too. I have a friend already based in Oakland willing to split an apartment, but was just considering the alternative if I do get Portland. Does anyone have suggestions for good areas in either? My buddy already with Ameriflight suggested Alameda, CA. Any others? I'm moving from New Jersey, so I'm not at all familiar with either place.

undflyboy06 07-28-2009 04:58 PM

Dang, I thought moving from Missouri was far enough.

Oakland is a hole, lots of crime, don't even think about living around there..its like Newark and KEWR airport, maybe not as bad, but if you're from NJ, you know what I'm talking about

San Francisco is very nice (my favorite place in the States), but expensive. That won't work unless you get a few roomates.. if you go south towards San Jose or north towards Santa Rosa, it starts to get a bit cheaper.... the Napa valley is georgus (to the NE)..

Bottom line, Oakland- sucks, and San Francisco- expensive... plan on driving at least 30-40 minutes

Spoilers 07-29-2009 11:06 AM

I don't work for AMF, but I can tell you that Portland is a very nice city, and I would try and bid there if you can. I have quite a few friends that fly at Horizon that are based in PDX, and a lot of them either live across the river in Vancouver, WA or West of PDX in Hillsboro, OR. There is no Sales Tax in Oregon, and the cost of living is obvioulsy a lot cheaper than OAK/Bay Area.

mosquito 07-29-2009 11:50 AM

Any one on the Sept 21 class? I guess I was bumped to that date.

slipped 07-29-2009 05:37 PM

I want to work for AMF SOOOOO bad

ImperialxRat 07-31-2009 05:25 PM

Live in Alameda if ya get OAK. My Aunt lived there for years and loved it, while commuting to San Fran with AA.

slipped 07-31-2009 11:07 PM

Yeah I live in the bay Oakland is really nice, for sure the bay has the highest COL but prob the best night life as well

AV8ER2 08-01-2009 02:49 AM

I also was moved from the Aug to September class. I know one other person + mosquito in Sept. Anyone else? Mos do have post training living arrangements? I told them OAK.

mosquito 08-01-2009 03:54 AM

Nope I do not have post training arrangements, let me know pm me if you have something in mind.

Ameriflight has always been my top choice over any regional airline. I think it is sad that you dont realize that Ameriflight will give you a huge opportunity to learn more than you ever could sitting SIC at some RJ operator.

Chances are...if you didnt ever really want to be there, then you dont belong there. Ameriflight is not a place for low time pilots to go just because they want a job. The 135 world is a beast that will crush you in a hurry if you are of the typical 300-700 hour low time guy who is just "tired of instructing and want to fly THE JET!"

GPS pink line followers, 2 pilot crew "training" from pilot mills, and RJ courses are not what Ameriflight and other 135 operators are looking for.

Totally agree

propjunkie 08-04-2009 11:58 AM

Im a new hire based in PDX. I just signed a month lease on a furnished two bedroom apartment. If any AMF pilots are looking for a place to stay pm me.

That's Mr. SkyGod...and Mr. SkyGod wants to know if you have ever flown 135 single pilot IFR??? I bet if you had, you would agree with me.

mosquito 08-07-2009 07:38 AM

question

Do we need to order the Jeps Chart before we get to ground school or Ameriflight will help us order it when we get there on day one? If I need to order it now can someone provide a link?

Thanks

Ameriflight provides you with Jepp Charts and Binders. When I started at AMF we had to buy our own charts and then get reimbursed. About two years ago we changed over to completely providing the charts when new hires go into ground school. The only thing I see most pilots buy is a trip book.

Thanks for the info Freightdog, But the letter of employment stated that I have to buy the charts. So I'll guess I'll hold off for now.

Then that's a change in policy. I would call AMF and ask for clarification.

Now now, Chieftains may not be as fancy as that B737, but AMF does keep people flying. You learn a lot, you sharpen your skills, and there haven't been any layoffs or furloughs. In fact, there's been a little bit of growth- not bad in the current climate.

For living at PDX, I would suggest looking across the river in Vancouver- there's no state income tax, and as a pilot you can claim exempt from Oregon state taxes under the RLA. Several pilots at the base live over there; check with them on places to live. The management at Hampton Hills ****ed me off, but others may have different opinions.

Do not order Jepps beforehand- you'll take care of that during Indoc. AMF now handles the accounts. If you already have a subscription, they will transfer the payments to their account.

I totally agree, and I'm a furloughed jjjjjjet guy myself. All-weather single-pilot flying makes a man of you. :)

undflyboy06 08-12-2009 11:15 AM

Just found out that Ameriflight doesn't reimburse you one cent when you have to move, even to the initial base after you are finished with training. I mean some reimbursement would be great, but when you have to move half way across the country and use a professional moving company to do it it gives you a different perspective.

Sorry if I’m ranting. Just want to give everyone else a heads up in the August and September class if you didn’t already know.

Thanks for the heads up. That is why I just need a place to sleep. I plan to go home on my days off.

Did your airline reimburse you for moving expenses? I don't think so! If you want to be a professional pilot, you have to be flexible and be willing to move. You knew from the beginning you would be based in either PDX or OAK. There ain't a whole lot of companies that pay for moving expenses. I'm sorry, but I don't have any sympathy for you, it comes with the job.

undflyboy06 08-12-2009 01:25 PM

I know........, I'm not looking for any sympathy. I know it comes with the territory. I guess I just failed to realize how expensive it really is to move, since this is the first major move that my wife and I have to do by ourselves, and not with family.

i just recieved a call from HR and i have a phone interview scheduled for next week. for those of you who went through this recently, what can i expect? just the normal HR questions or are there more specific aeronautical knowledge questions? thanks for the help!

dashtrash300 08-20-2009 04:52 PM

How do you submit your resume on the website? All I can find is to update an existing resume. Does that mean they are not taking new ones at this time?

AtlCSIP 08-20-2009 06:30 PM

I have a phone interview next week, also. Submitted on-line about a month ago and updated two weeks later, which was after I got a "thank you but we are no longer hiring" email.

undflyboy06 08-20-2009 08:50 PM

Find a way;

The phone interview is really straight forward. In fact, it wasn't a hard phone interview at all. All the HR questions were really basic. What they do is that they tailor their questions towards your work experience that you have on your resume. Some of the questions were; what you liked and disliked about your current or former employer, would you go back to your former employer if they called you, where you would like to be based in the future. If you flight instructed they might ask you what you liked about flight instructing. It only takes about 5-8 minutes. Afterwards it will take about 1 week to find out if you are invited to the interview.

Good Luck!

Mine was more or less the same. It's tough to remember, but I do recall the "What do you like about your current job?", "Where were you on the seniority list?", "Would you accept a recall to XYZ Airlines if offered one?", "Which base would you prefer?", etc etc.

No studying really required. The phone interview caught me completely off guard since I was camping when they called me, but it was basic HR questions. I don't remember there being anything technical.

Congrats to all you guys/girls. It's great to hear that they're still interviewing.

minimwage4 08-21-2009 01:04 PM

Why are amflight mins a couple of hours below pt135? Do they prefer lower time guys, is there a pretty good turnover rate?

mosquito 08-21-2009 01:23 PM

Nice to know that they are still hiring, i wonder if more based opened up. I would love to go to DFW or SJU. Can't wait to start next month.
